Tactical Iraqi Language & Culture Training System (TILT)

A self-paced foreign-language training program that use numerous research-based pedagogic and technologic innovations — including interactive 3D video game simulations — to teach what to say, how to say it, and when to say it. Acting as comprehensive cultural tutors, the courses teach practical cultural knowledge, sensitivity and awareness — including non-verbal gestures, etiquette, and norms of politeness — that are critical for successful communication.

Trainees learn by listening to and speaking in the foreign language, getting immediate feedback and guidance. They play fun, immersive, interactive 3D video games that simulate real life communication by role playing with animated 'socially intelligent virtual humans' that recognize trainees' speech, gestures and behavior. If trainees speak and behave correctly, the virtual humans become trustful and cooperative, and provide information that trainees need to advance. Otherwise, the virtual humans are uncooperative and prevent trainees from 'winning' the game.

The company currently offer courses to study Iraqi Arabic language and culture (Tactical Iraqi), Pashto language and culture for the Pashtun regions of Afghanistan (Tactical Pashto), and French as spoken in the countries of Sahel Africa (Tactical French). An Afghan Dari course (Tactical Dari) is scheduled for release soon. Military training missions include civil affairs, house cordon and search, entry check point, crowd management, team training, and information gathering.

TILT: Language Learning Via Video Gaming (news article)

provides 'virtual' Iraqis to train Soldiers in language proficiency and cultural awareness through computer video games with animated characters and life-like simulations that emphasize missions they'll conduct downrange. Trainees start learning functional communication skills within a few hours of play.

The tactical Iraqi language and culture training, known as TILT, requires no instructor and is done solely on a self-paced basis. The 100-hour course is set up on computers like a video game with voice-activated commands and characters who respond in kind and with gestures.

TILT won DARPA's 2005 Award for Significant Technical Achievement
