While they haven't done a very good job of running 911 services (http://www.corpsman.com/shownews/95361), Fairpoint Communications, which just acquired Verizon's Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine networks, says they're gearing up to expand DSL availability in Vermont. According to the Bennington Banner (http://www.benningtonbanner.com/local/ci_9860128), Fairpoint is promising Vermont residents that 75% of their phone lines will be able to offer DSL by the end of this year. A spokesperson tempers enthusiasm:"By 2010, we hope to have at least 80 percent of households in the state with DSL access," Fastiggi said. "We hope to have every customer in half of our exchanges to have access by 2010 as well." According to Fastiggi, though, the expansion does not mean that every house in these towns will receive access to the service. "We're doing certain areas in each town nothing we're doing encompasses the entire town," Fastiggi said. "I don't want to say we're expanding bit by bit, but we are moving neighborhood by neighborhood."
Fairpoint is still paying Verizon $16 million a month in transition fees to co-run the networks, and the date for full takeover was recently bumped from September to November (http://www.corpsman.com/shownews/95389).
