As predicted yesterday (http://www.corpsman.com/shownews/NYC-FiOS-Deal-Should-See-Final-Approval-Today-96155), the New York State Public Service Commission has approved Verizon's application for a NYC video franchise, meaning that the telco will now begin their promised deployment (http://newscenter.verizon.com/press-releases/verizon/2008/verizon-files-application-and.html) of FiOS to every city resident by 2014. The actual approval is here (http://www3.dps.state.ny.us/pscweb/WebFileRoom.nsf/ArticlesByCategory/0355AF49C21AE70185257488006724F0/$File/pr08081.pdf?OpenElement), calling the deal "a sure-fire win for consumers in New York City." The Verizon press release (http://newscenter.verizon.com/press-releases/verizon/2008/verizons-tv-franchise.html) says that the first FiOSTV customers should be online within weeks. "We're thrilled to be able to bring FiOS TV to the people of New York," says the telco. It's great news; just be sure to keep an eye on Big Red -- she's got a bit of a sketchy history (http://www.corpsman.com/shownews/30544) when it comes to fiber promises, and the franchise deal gives Verizon ample opportunity to wiggle out of full, citywide deployment once the most profitable areas are wired.
