The much-anticipated decision (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/95468) regarding whether or not the XM/Sirius merger will be allowed to move forward continues to hang in the balance with the FCC requesting (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/18/AR2008071802744.html?nav=rss_technology) more concessions from the two companies. Two of the five members of the commission have voted in favor of allowing the merger to go forward but a key vote from commission member Jonathan Adelstein could be determined by whether or not the companies will meet some additional demands. "He told the companies that they would have to agree to cap prices for their service for six years after the merger, set aside one-quarter of their radio spectrum for noncommercial and minority programming and equip satellite receivers with high-definition over-the-air radio signals to ensure that traditional radio will be able to compete with the monopoly."
Independent monitoring would be put into place in order to make sure that the companies complied with these requirements after the approval of the merger. The companies have not yet responded regarding their feelings about these new demands.
