Aircell has only recently begun trials (http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/95540) of in-flight Wi-Fi and yet the company is already making second-generation plans for the service. "When the service goes live later on this year, it will use CDMA EVDO Rev A for data transfer during flights, topping out at more than 12 Mbps. By the end of 2009, Aircell plans to up that number to 22.7 Mbps with advances in its current technology." (source) (http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/2406/64/)
However, the goal is to switch over (http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/38479/113/) to 4G LTE by 2011. The bandwidth should be capable of 300 Mbps speeds at that time, making it possible to play bandwidth-hogging online computer games or watch interactive HDTV on your computer during your flight. Although in-flight LTE-based Wi-Fi is intended for the benefit of the customers, it will also likely improve the technology available to those people operating the plane; for example, high-resolution weather-to-the-cockpit services should be improved once this service is available.
