The latest global rankings (http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=159797) in fiber to the home (FTTH) deployment penetration show that the United States has dropped from eighth to tenth place. While a lot of this obviously has to do with geography, it doesn't really help the U.S. that there's just one major broadband operator seriously investing in fiber to the home technology. Still, Verizon's total FiOS count is greater than many European countries at this point. Overall, the U.S. FTTH penetration rate grew from 2.3 to 2.9 percent since the end of last year, with 3.3 million FTTH subscribers total.
