I am having trouble finding information about the DT corpsman expanded functions capability and if it is considered part of STAR and if it is administered via TAD or whatnot. I have heard several stories and would like to know what the "real deal" is with regard to this. I was a blueside corpsman with no dental whatsoever who is now assigned to greenside dental and was curious how all this would play out as well. I am confident that I can get the OJT hours to challenge for the NEC but was wondering if there were others in the same boat with the same questions as well. Any current DT corpsmen or people with the knowledge to share would be much appreciated.

Not sure if it applies to you but have you completed the HM/DT Difference Training required by NAVADMIN 214/05?
It is required if you started NHCS before Aug 05 and had to be completed by July06 for active duty and July07 for SelRes. HM's had to do DT training and DT's had to do HM training. New joins since Aug05 are now taught the material in NHCS so they are not required to complete HM/DT Difference Training.
Lots of people have dropped the ball there and technically they are ineligible for promotion.

What NEC are you looking at going after?

I went through NHCS back in Jan of '06 so that should be covered. I went straight to a blue side hospital side unit. I am a 0000 and 8404 and to me it is useless unless I am a tech of some sort. I am not even sure what is available as far a NEC's go for dental but since I was "hooked up" with these orders to dental I want to get something out of it. I understand a lot of times you get out of it what you put in so I am willing to learn and 3 years is a long time to learn something. I will probably pick up second class PO in the not too distant future and so that may change things a little. I am hoping to pick up in Sep cycle.

HMC,
He just wants a NEC.. See here is the deal, if he gets the basic Dental NEC, which is good through 3rd Class, once he goes for 2nd.. he loses it.. Unless he gets a expanded Dental NEC, I .e Bio or something else.. All other NEC's though for Dental in advanced stuff you have to be a E-5 or above.. He has a lot of decisions to make..
