I’m confused, because is FMSS mandatory for all male HMs? because in my contract it was not listed because I don’t wanted it. I'm going active duty HM too. How do you get HMs jobs like on a ship or hospital or being in the green zone (Iraq) in a medical hospital. (no disrespect to marines out there)

well as it has been stated in numerous threads. This is a time of WAR. The needs of the Navy out weigh the needs of the one. You have a lot lower chance of being away from the Green side then getting on a ship or clinic.

...FMSS...

There isn't FMSS anymore, it's been called Field Medical Training Battalion, (FMTB) for quite awhile now. You probably won't find it written anywhere that FMTB is 'mandatory', but...............all Corpsman, at some point in there career, will be attending FMTB.

...I don’t wanted it...

You don't have to want it, nor does it have to be in your contract. You are sent, due to the needs of the service! We are at war!

Ok, so If was sent FMTB what are my chances of being assigned to a marine unit in my first five year enlistment? or I’ am I sent to a hospital? My last question is if sent to the green side does every HM travel with the marines. (Sorry new to this field but I'm interest in the medical field for college).

Your Chances may vary from month to month depending on the needs of the Navy and the Marine Corps (Which btw is a part of the DEPT of the NAVY), so really it does not need to be in your contract.

If you go to FMTB right out of school, chances are you will be with the Marines. Don't let a recruiter tell you it is "VOLUNTARY" the only thing voluntary about the service now is what your doing prior to reporting to Boot, after your in Boot Camp, Don't be a whining little "BIOTCH".

MAN UP.. Understand you joined the Best mother bleeping fighting service in the world.

Look I hate to be harsh, but I would not want to be your Chief who would have to stick another pacifier in another boob's mouth coming to Corps School whining.

Turn on the Fricken News.. See Afghanistan?? See Iraq?? Serve your country and MAN-UP!!...

If you don't want to go to a war zone and serve - then I would suggest that you reconsider enlisting in the Navy as a Corpsman. Or in the Army as a medic for that matter.

It's lovely that you want to go into the medical field for college but you really have to understand that we are at war and our medical personnel are trained to go to hostile areas and do their jobs. If your recruiter is telling you that you won't have to go to FMTB and have the possibility to serve with the Marines they are lying to you.

I don't want to discourage you to become a corpsman but you need to know that corpsman are trained to go to combat with the Marines and you need to be prepared to meet that responsibility.

I am going to be a little more pleasant than harsh - out of my class of forty something when we graduated in 1997: two got ships, some got C-schools with FMTB first, and some got green assignments after FMTB.

a. You still have to go to FMTB to get a C-school and chances are you can either end up in a hospital, ship, or green side under the specialized NEC.

b. Green side units can be deployed without going to a combat zone. (Very rarely)

c. Don't join as an HM if you don't want to take the risk: DO join if you are going to learn some of the best medical training.

I got a small ship in San Diego straight out of OR Tech and FMTB due to needs of the navy involving a junior corpsman on spousal co-location. I had the best two years working under an incredible IDC.

You are not going to know what you will get until the paper orders are in your hand with a plane ticket and a seabag with what uniform to wear when you arrive!!

By the Way - I don't think that was a pacifier in the picture -- it looks more like a choke guard for a horse!

Uh - no boobs for that overbite!!!

How do you get HMs jobs like on a ship or hospital or being in the green zone (Iraq) in a medical hospital.

() Apply for a C-School that earns you a hospital based NEC.
() Apply for a C-School that earnes you a shipboard NEC.
() Request a hospital or shipboard duty location on your "Dream Sheet" as you approach graduation.
() Qualify and volunteer for shipboard duty or forward deployed hospital duty.
() Top performers and graduates at the top of the class are more likely to be rewarded and receive orders to their desired duty location.
() At least one FMF tour is required if you expect your Navy career to progress.

However, just because you are assigned to a ship or hospital does not mean you will stay there. You may be assigned to FMF duty for your next tour after the ship/hospital. You may be directed to FMF duty as an Individual Augmentee (IA) while you are assigned to a ship or hospital.

And if you are wanting to serve at a forward deployed hospital in the Baghad Green Zone, why they heck are you trying to avoid essential training that will help you survive in a combat zone?

I think you may not understand the incredible variety of duty positions held by FMF Corpsmen. Not every FMF Corpsman is out on humps in the field with a infantry unit rifle company as a grunt Doc. Some FMF Corpsmen rarely, if ever, go to the field like that and spend the vast majority of their time at a clinic or in an aircraft. But just who do you think works in the field hospitals and expeditionary medical facilities?

You might want to stop seeing FMST @ FMTB as an obligation to perform infantry duty and try viewing it as valuable training that can help you.
