I am going to be going to HM school right after boot and was curious on what I could bring. I wear contacts so I know I can't wear those to boot but can I have my family bring those (or mail them). Also, can we have a cell phone and laptop? Is the school within walking distance from where you bunk? How does transportation work.

You can have your contacts, cell phone and laptop at Corps School - BUT you can't have them in your possession when you are at boot camp. Which means you can't have them until after you transfer to Corps School. So, you should have your parents hold them until you get to Corps School then they can ship them to you there (or bring them if they are close enough to come visit)

Another thing to consider is security of your laptop while you are at Corps School. Its funny how some things grow legs and just wander off. This includes cell phones, iPods, cameras . . . - well you get the idea. If you want to keep it, LOCK IT UP when you aren't using it. You can't carry your cell phone when you are in the schoolhouse. Atleast you couldn't when my son was there. (if this has changed i'm sure it won't be long before someone corrects me) :)

As for walking to the schoolhouse - yes, most of the barracks are within walking distance. I understand that there are some students that were housed on Main Side which makes for a longer walk - but you will get used to it.
There are some buses that run on base to get you around - check with the schoolhouse for some kind of schedule of those. I know they don't run all the time.

Study hard, relax when you can but don't party and you will do well at Corps School.

Congrats on going HM

I would like to add one more thing, with regards to lap top computers.

1.) Get Insurance on the lap top in case it is stolen
2.) Try and get some form of GPS tracking software, so if it is stolen, it can be tracked!

If you do decide to sneak carrying your cell phone, at least set it to vibrate. Can you imagine the Instructors expression, when your cell phone starts ringing during class. Rut Row.....

LOCK UP EVERYTHING! Even if you're leaving the room for just 30 seconds.

We wish you our best!

I wouldnt even bother taking your cell phone to class putting it on vibrate isnt safe either.....you will be standing in front of your instructor explaing why you can follow simple rules and he may not give it back to you untill graduation......dont ask me how i know.... lol

One guy recently got de'd for having his cell at the school house, just dont bring it to the school house, stow till liberty is called. There is a shuttle system on base that runs during liberty, its pretty easy to figure out down here, so dont worry bout it.

So I can bring a cell phone, but only use it on weekends?

That 'is' what the others have been saying! Just don't bring it to class. Keep it in your locked locker! You can use it during your 'off' hours, such as at night or on the weekends.

The barracks are all basically a block or closer to the schoolhouse. You are allowed to keep anything you would like in your room in the barracks, as long as it doesnt violate pretty obvious restrictions. (weapons, drugs, alcohol, etc) I have my ipod, laptop, cellphone and a cheap little tv (we dont get cable in our rooms in 131, but its nice for movies) All of these things are just fine in your room or on your person around base durring liberty hours. In the schoolhouse building however NONE of it is allowed, so you just leave it in your room during the schoolday.

Also, DONT try and beat the system, at least not during your initial NMT phase. Our HM2 instructor got about 20 people phased down during muster because he caught them with cell phones. What he did, was take out his cell phone and did a search for other bluetooth devices, and i guess those 20 popped up because were on standby for a while waiting for them to fess up while he walked around trying to figure out where the signals were coming from!

Wow. . . That's amazing. Wouldn't have thought of that. Though maybe that's 'cause my bluetooth setting on my phone has never worked... along with the rest of it actually. Damned "razr."

Moral of this thread--don't bring your flipping phone to the class building. Probably not going to have a moment where you'd be able to use it anyway. Goofy. No sense in jeporidizing loosing your rate because of some phone. Gosh, that'd suck.

You would be surprised...some people can't live without them for even a few hours...

Could someone elaborate on the restrictions set upon new arrivals to NHCS.

In a round about way I am wanting to know when I can enjoy a (singular) beer and a smoke. I bus over from RTC on Tuesday. I don't do either very often but I am in the mood to spoil myself.

You have to be more specific than that...We don't "restrict"you to your room. Just follow the direction of the Petty Officers in charge, stay out of trouble, ask questions if you don't understand something, and stay out of trouble, you should be fine.

my husband was at corps school not to long ago.. and he was a fleet returnee so he automatically had phase 3 liberty(which i was happy about only living 4 and a half hrs away, went there EVERY weekend) but anyways he took his cell phone like an idiot and got knocked down to phase 2..(i was mad, no more whole weekend liberty for awhile, lol)

Oh and if you have verizon... good luck getting service in the barracks.. it aint gonna happen, lol!!

same with t-mobile you get horrible reception in the barracks, also i think someone said this before, but over all about cells DON'T BRING THEM.
because the instructors just look on there cell and they can see all the names of the people who have the cells on and in the area(this happened everyday during nmt and everyday about 30 people had there cells on them). if you are going to carry a cell on you before 1800 then have your cell off! otherwise you are just saying (your name) is disobeying the rules due to technology.

also don't waist your money, i just met someone that bought the most expensive cell phone that the store had and plan and now they pay 85$ a month for a cell that they can only use from the hrs of 1800-2200 or latter but your roommates might get mad at you if you talk latter than that

:geek:Color me squared away ... The truth is we are given a lot of freedoms and a lot of tools from day one to get ahead. I think 'll enjoy this place. Of course the county jail would seem like a resort hotel by comparison to RTC.

Thanks for the input though.
