Chiefs beat Raiders to keep playoff hopes alive

Sun Dec 24, 1:50 AM ET

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Oakland Raiders 20-9 on Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak and keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

Larry Johnson rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown to help the Chiefs improve to 8-7, but they remain a long shot for one of two AFC wild card berths.

The New York Jets, Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos are all on 8-6 with a game in hand.

"We needed to win a game, we've lost three in a row and that never puts a good taste in your mouth," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards told reporters. "Turnovers are key, we got a few turnovers and were able to score some points.

"We were fortunate to get out of here with a win but we needed one and now we need to try and win one more."

While the Chiefs can still dream of the playoffs, the Raiders' nightmare season continued as they absorbed their eighth consecutive defeat, falling to 2-13 and matching the franchise record for most losses in a season.

For the seventh game this season the Raiders failed to score a touchdown, Sebastian Janikowski accounting for the Oakland points with three field goals.

Kansas running back Johnson's big night moved him ahead of San Diego Chargers LaDainian Tomlinson in the race for the NFL rushing title, though his time at the top is likely to be short lived.

NO OFFENSE

Johnson carried the ball 31 times and boosted his season total to 1,651 rushing yards. Tomlinson has 1,626-yards going into Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Oakland's NFL-worst offense made a sizeable contribution to the Kansas City win turning the ball over five times, including a pair of interceptions from beleaguered quarterback Andrew Walter.

The Raiders got the game off to a positive start with Janikowski booting a 25-yarder on Oakland's opening drive to put the home side in front 3-0 lead.

But Kansas City responded with an 11-play, 60-yard drive capped off by a six-yard touchdown strike from Trent Green to Eddie Kennison.

The Chiefs added a 29-yard Lawrence Tynes field goal on their next possession then a one-yard TD run from Johnson in the second for a comfortable 17-6 lead at the intermission.

Green completed just 12 of 24 attempts for 148 yards with one touchdown and an interception, but that was more than enough to hold off the Raiders' toothless attack.
