I'm a former 0311 who recently graduated FMSS. I am currently serving as a Corpsmanwith a Marine Corps Reserve unit. Does anybody have the scoop on volunteering for mobilizations with Marine Corps units? Is there a way to look up specific FMF billets like there is for reserve Marines? I've done everything that I know of through my chain of command; from the results I've gotten you would think I'm asking for a date with the CNO's wife.

DocVermin,
Are you assigned to a Naval Reserve Center?? Someone has to be doing the Navy side of things for you. Let me know.. Go to your Manpower dept.. there is a code they have to switch in your record to "V" so you put out the word you want to volunteer for a billet somewhere.
"BUT"
If you have a pay billet and you are assigned to a billet with a MARINE unit. Most likely they will not send you as your Operational OP % goes down if you go somewhere else.
Trust me thoguh if you are needed and you have the "V" thing switched in your record you have a good chance of going.
Hope this helps..

Thanks Chief,
I am assigned to a Navy/Marine Corps reserve center. I think part of the problem is that certain parts of the systemaren't convinced that I'm an 8404. I willdouble check on the "V". I recently re-enlisted and toldman power that I was interested in volunteering at that time, but Idon't know if they did anything about it. Does that code have a name, orifI just tell them to put a V in my record will they know what I'm talking about? Sorry if that’s a stupid question, I’m still learning how the system works on the Navy side of the house.
Respectfully,

Doc V,
Just remember, the only stupid questions are the ones that go unanswered!

All you have to do is tell them you want to volunteer for mobilization. The code is on the RUID and I can't recall what it's called....But it will show up on there if they change. You can ask whoever is in charge of your muster if you are shown as a volunteer for mobilization. There is a site for the Navy called JASS where you can put in for billets, if you want to check into that. But if you want to go to Iraq, let it be known and you will be gone before you know it.

It's not just what you say, but how you say it....
There might also be some underlying unit politics you are not aware of. As a former 0311, are you sure your current Navy rank, rate and NEC are permanent? What about a current PRT failure or bad Eval? Any one of those things may be a show stopper. http://www.npc.navy.mil/NR/rdonlyres/70A2DC26-4648-4302-94B9-E3E9A9406905/0/selresgar.pdf
As a Reservist you can submit your name as a volunteer for mobilization to your local command (Marine and Navy) or you can go to the BOL webpage: https://www.bol.navy.mil/reserve/volunteer.asp However, the is no guarantee you will get orders for the Marines.
I think you can also volunteer for the Individual Augmentee (IA) Program through NKO: https://wwwa.nko.navy.mil/portal/page?paf_communityId=co40220014
Check and apply for the ADSW & ReCall opportunities from BUPERS: http://www.npc.navy.mil/Audiences/ForReserves/
Contact your NOSC Command Career Counselor for assistance in submitting a package. You should also get to know your Enlisted Community Manager.
You can also login to the Navy Reserve Website and browse for mobilization and ADSW opportunities: http://navyreserve.navy.mil/Public/Staff/WelcomeAboard/default.htm
Look under the Mobilization & Readiness tab
Do some good old fashion networking and find out what commands are mobilizing soon. You can request by-name mobilization orders or submit a chit for transfer. Some units have a very high tempo and are constantly rotating through the sand box. I-MEF and II-MEF also regularly ask for Reserve support whenever they rotate a new batch of Marines.
These are just a few options to consider. Depending on how you exercise your options, some of them could be considered nuclear options that will get you mobilized but may burn some bridges at your current command. Generally speaking, that is not the way to get things done and will come back to bite you in the backside if you stay Navy for any length of time.
