i was talking to my dad about boot. he was in the army, my brother in the marine corps... he said i need to carry on the family tradition of qualifying expert. is there anything to qualify on?

you can qual on the M16 (rifle) and the M9 (pistol) and receive your ribbons. if you are a Corpsman and come to the green side you pretty much get to shoot what they have available. It is very wise to learn every weapons system you can in case you need to get behind it to take over for your wounded brother.

I wasn't able to fire any weapons in boot camp..something about lead abatement....but as I understand it, you get to fire a lot more now...not sure whether you can qualify in boot camp or not...but, as I said in another posting, if you go greenside, you'll be able to fire most of the weapons in the infantry inventory. I get to the range about every 6 months, and was even offered the chance to be on the Navy shooting team for the western division matches (I ended up providing medical coverage for the matches instead). These days marksmanship is about more than the ribbon/medal...it's potentially about survival...yours and your Marines.

From what I have seen everyone now entering boot camp is now allowed to qual on the 9mm. They unfortunatly don't have an outdoor range over there so no rifle quals.

It's true. Boot camp requires 9mm training to graduate which provides your first opportunity to earn a ribbon. You also fire 5 rounds with the mossberg 12 ga. shotgun. Good times.

I had a great time shooting, well minus that little cut I got during the last off hand shoot.

Hm. Anyone know if my Marine Corps quals carry over when I enlist? Just out of selfish curiosity. :)
