I was told that FMF is volunteer only I want to make sure i wasn't lied to because I saw all the oppurtunity in the corpsman field and Biomedical Equipment Technician caught my eye and I'd rather not be put into combat at all
Yeah... you were told wrong. Sorry. And as for biomed, you won't get that straight out of corps school anyway.

But at least this young gentleman is informed..
Look, My beef is this.. If you don't want to fight, then don't join. Plain and simple.. We don't have a draft you have to volunteer to join the military.. After you are in. there are "0" promises..
Your Ass then belongs to the Military, they say Jump, You say "HOW HIGH", They Say time for Combat, you say.."YESSIR, or YESS MA"AM", When are we leavin?"..
If you can't do that.. Don't join. I am sorry your recruiter mis-informed you, but am damn glad Corpsman.com is here to clear this up before you come to our neck of the woods.
Good day!

Now that the elders have spoken their piece, let me give you some honest info.
1. FMF is not volunteer.
2. Biomed is really hard to get.
3. Enlisting as an airman goes like this:
a. boot camp
b. airman ATD school.
c. possible c - school for job,
or
assigned to ship or squadron as a striker.
A. striker means you go to where they need people. (bottom of totem pole)
you go to one department to do job, learn how to do it while doing manuals like airman, PO3 quals, and books for that rate. Test out, strike for another job, or advance.
The truth shall set you free...
be prepared to work on an aircraft carrier flight deck
(most DANGEROUS place in the world),
in an aircraft hangar on a moving ship,
some of the worst duty stations,
possibly deployed to wherever,
and with odd hours and bad conditions.
I know this because my older brother was an airman striker who worked up to avation bosun chief over fifteen years before getting out.

And even then if your a Aviation Person you still can get Sent "IA" into Combat. Aviation folks are going all the time into IRAQ as well as AFGHANISTAN.
Good Day Sir!

I was originally apping for the coast guard but they aren't taking anybody and i was disqualified but i was offered OS (operations specialist) for that does the navy have anything like that because communications and intilligence is what I really wanted by my test scores weren't high enough for anything in intelligence according to the classifier which is odd since they were for the coast guard.
You should have no problem getting OS in the Navy, but only MEPS can tell you for sure. But once again, you stand the risk of being sent IA to Iraqistan.

im not to worried about being sent somewhere I just really don't want to be put into a situation where im going to have to shoot or be shot i understand that i run the risk of that but i'd like a job with the least likeliness of being put in that position i thought some of the fields for corpsman would be good in that aspect but it seems like everyone is sent to FMF so nevermind they told me its mostly hospital work

Sparta:
From what I understand of the Sailors Creed, it states you will support and defend the Constitution and that you, as a Sailor, will represent the fighting spirit of the Navy.
Those words are not a football cheer, it means what it says. If you don't want to be put into a position of having to shoot, defend or represent the fighting spirit of the U.S. Navy, perhaps you may need to find a civilian type of job.
SAILORS CREED
I am a United States Sailor.
I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and I will obey the orders of those appointed over me.
I represent the fighting spirit of the Navy and those who have gone before me to defend freedom and democracy around the world.
I proudly serve my country's Navy combat team with honor, courage and commitment.
I am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all.
By continually striving to use Navy Core Values as a guidepost in your personal and professional life, you will be doing your best to help keep America free, and to ensure your own success and happiness.
Sparta, I think before you leae for RTC youneed to have a long talk with yourself about what you are doing. My time in the Navy has been nothing but schools and hospitals, and I myself don't want to be put in the shoot or be shot position either, I signed up fully aware that one day it might come down to that. I'm ready and willing to go anywhere and do anything my Commander in Chief asks me to do, not because I want to, but because that's what I signed up for and that's what the country pays me to do. Anyone in the military should have that very same mind set, regardless of why they joined and what they want or don't want to do. You need to ask yourself if you can do that, and if it is worth the reason you want to join.

thanks krash and i feel the same way you do im not saying i can't do it just saying i hope im not put into the situation if i have to shoot someone and its me or them well i hope they are ready for a long nap im signing up because the benifits to what i want are well more worth it than the negatives are and ya ive had that talk hence like i said i want the job least likely to put me in that situation again i am well aware that joining the forces and being at war theres always a chance i'll have to do that but doing something where i watch a radar and doing something like say for instance the seals do i'd less likely get bloody hands. oh and for the record it isn't out of fear of dying either that doesn't bother me

Then try for OS, QM, AG, ASM, IT, SK, SH, DC, PN, YN, or PC. The purpose of these particular jobs is either onboard ships or with squadrons that are out of field of fire so to speak. Recruiters have a rate chart or notebook describing each of these jobs.

At least half those rates are here in Fallujah, they walk around in desert utlities, and carry M16/M4, and/or M9. Doesn't matter what rate you are, you might still have a good chance to come out here to the sandbox, or up to the rockpile. Do me and everyone else that proudly wears the Caduse a favor, do not become a Corpsman... Do not join the military at all, you might as well as stay home where you think its safe... :rmad:

Somebody has been blowing smoke up your ass. The Seals are the the Navy's Special Warfare units.

Tact, my point in posting those particular rates is that probably only about ten percent of those people at most are deployed to the rock or sandbox.
I didn't want to discourage someone from volunteering for shipboard or base duties.
For HM or major rates, definitely not. Minor rates for ships, yes.
(No disrespect intended for our other sailors in blue [I was also a QM})
