NAVADMIN 240/08 posted last week with the new SRB multiples and from what I can see over the last 10 years of SRB messages, this is the first time an SRB message has come right on the heels of a new fiscal year with the new multiples taking effect 30 Sept. Historically, SRB NAVADMINS have posted April-May, Oct.-Nov. timeframe. So with that being said, I am sure I am not the only one negatively affected by the timing of this message. I am HM NEC 8506, and my multiple for zone B just dropped from 3.5 to 1.0. I am currently deployed to Iraq, and did so at this time in an effort to max out my SRB. My EAOS is 12 Feb. 2009, therefore I am required to wait until at least 01 Oct., the new fiscal year, to reenlist. My SRB PRECERT was submitted approximately 60 days ago, with a scheduled reenlistment date of 01 Oct. 2008. However, now, based upon this new NAVADMIN, those that are negatively affected by these new SRB multiples are told that in order to lock in the old multiples and not take the hit, they must reenlist prior to 30 Sept. But again, I cannot reenlist until 01 Oct. Due to the awkward timing of this NAVADMIN, I would like to think that PERS is taking this into consideration and will allow those members that look to take a significant monetary deduction and are in the same boat as me, to reenlist early (before the new fiscal year) in order to keep the higher of the SRB multiples. For me, this is a difference of $30,000 plus I am in a tax free zone. My CCCs are already working on this for me, as this is awkward for them as well due to the timing of this message. Again, this is the first time (I reviewed every SRB NAVADMIN since 2000) that an SRB NAVADMIN has posted for Sept., right at the end of the fiscal year. I am sure there are many Sailors that are waiting for 01 Oct. as well so they can reenlist, and I am sure there are many that look to be negatively affected by these new multiples that become official 30 Sept. I am just wondering if anyone has already experienced this and has any info on the plans of PERS to account for a situation such as this. I really can't see the Navy allowing their personnel to take such a negative monetary hit like this, especially for personnel who are currently deployed.

HM2,

I feel your pain brother. As a fellow 8506, you can imagine how i felt as my Zone A dropped from 4.5 to 2.0. My CCC told me that i basically have to take this one on the arm since my EAOS is April 09.

Perhaps this means that it will be easier for me to archive or get a new primary NEC, since the demand for 8506 seems to have dropped. Holding this NEC has been frustrating for me and kept me from many things i have come to enjoy about the military. Mainly, the lab environment at my command has become increasingly more civilian than military over the last few years. Also, i realized that i joined the military to serve others and i find it to be personally more of a rewarding experience to serve greenside or with direct pt contact of some sort. Maybe you missed out on a chunk of money, but as long as you enjoy your job i think you're still ahead of the game. I'm not sure if you just took the exam but if so, i hope you advanced. I'd rather get a promotion than a higher SRB anyway. ;)
