After graduating NHCS, a Corpsman gets the Quad Zero NEC right? What can he/she do while waiting for C school? Do they work in naval hospitals or on ships as general corpsman?

If you are not one of the fortunate ones to be offered a 'C' school out of Corpsman 'A' school, you will have to wait until completion of your first tour of duty (2-3 years). At that time, you would work with your detailer as to what you are qualified for and can submit a package requesting a 'C' school from that list.

Your first tour of duty? That could be anywhere from a hospital or a Battalion Aid Station on a Marine Corps base anywhere in the world. The probability of a ship is nil except for perhaps the hospital ships.

Because we are at war, you will, at some point in your Naval career/enlistment be attending FMTB (http://www.lejeune.usmc.mil/fmtb/index.shtml) where you will be assigned the NEC of 8404 at graduation.

Then after that, it's all dependent on the needs of the Navy and those needs change weekly.

I don't find being a Quad Zero as being a disadvantage..

Most who make CPO's are Quad "0000's"..

8404 is like a Quad Zero other then they are Field HM's..

As a Quad 0000 or a 8404, you are a jack of all trades.. Expert of none, but master of all..

Hope this helps..

I call BS on Tony,

Be it that we are the "Navy" and have over two hundred surface vessels in our fleet, everyone of which has at least one HM onboard if not more, chances are possible as a Quad zero HM that they could draw a ship.

Here is your challenge Tony: to fix the mistake, how many current active fleet vessels do we have?

Alright, Doc, so I was tired and misused a term! I've been very busy with a sick wife and an elderly mother which resulted in 3 trips to the hospital in 2 days and I hammered out my response rather hastily. Please forgive me my haste. I should have stated there is a chance, of pulling orders for a ship right out of Corpsman 'A' school. If I can recall correctly I think I remember Da-Chief stating once, while working at NHCS, there were not too many graduating Corpsman getting orders to ships. Thus the basis of my answer.

Okay, now for my SW Qualification question! "How many current active fleet vessels do we have"? I choose the answer of 252. This would include the 3 USNS (Grasp, Salvor and Grapple), Subs and the 5 PCU's. The count does not include the Comfort or Mercy Hospital Ships.

If you exclude the count of 70 submarines, the count would then be 182.

How did I do? Do I get 'pinned' or am I ordered back to latrine duty?

Find that toothbrush and bucket behind the door,

a vice(?) admiral up for recommendation for JCS interviewed in June 2007 stated that there was currently 277 and the goal was to get to 313 by 1/1/09 (without the USNS ships which belong to Military Sealift Command).

Its now midnight where I am at, report to the POOW and have the head so shiny I can see myself in the porcelain and stainless steel by 0900.

Good try though.

I did have to do a ship count on navy.mil by their alaphabetical listing to get the number.

I used a Navy site as well, but don't have the link.

Out of 8000 Hospital Corps billets in the Navy..

800-850 Billets assinged to ships..

In the 3 years I worked at Corps School in Student Personnel.. We only sent 4-6 students to ships.. that is all..And per Mrs. Tucker (Civ who has been doing orders for ever) That is usually the going rate..

there you go..

The Billets per Ships.. Came from the Force Master Chief..

One before last..

So Tony let up and share some of the tooth brush with Devil doc.. Tony you do Port Side, Devil you do the Starboard side..

Giddyup gents..
