Hi, I am an NCS corpsman. I've done my active duty time and doing my drills.
My problem is that I am in a verge of getting an Admin Sep.
I already failed 2 PFA cycle and about to have another one next week.
I am doing my best to get fit again, but future does not look bright and want to be prepared for the worst that could happen.
Here comes my question, If I get administrative separation am I gonna have to pay back my $5,000 bonus? or is there any way to avoid it?
It's been hard for me to keep up with drills while I am also working in the civilian world.
So I was also wondering if I could choose to go IRR.
I know it sound demotivating, but I am serious and need help.
Please help me.
Thanks

Check the MILPERSMAN regarding Admin Sep and OBLISERV. Basically, from what I have read, if you dont not fulfill your OBLISERV (means your obligated service for what you received your bonus) A possible "recoupment" of entitlemtents can happen. Now if it states that you received the 5k for the active duty time you did... your good to go, because you statisfied your OBLISERV for that enlistment bonus. But if the OBLISERV includes your drill time, they can try to get their money back becasue you have not fulfilled your end of the contract (by staying physically eligible for service in the Navy).
Now also, I am no expert, but if you are on the verge of getting Admin Sep'ed, they will have a hard time accpeting you into the IRR. Part of any transfer/move requires you to be physically fit... dont take this a bad way, but if you cant stay within standards as a driller, why would the IRR want you?
I would recommend a few things:
1)Talk with your CoC/PRT coordinator, see if they can help you out. Do they offer FEP as a driller?
2) Friggin bust your A** on this next cycle, you HAVE to pass.
3) Do you have it in writing that if you fail this next cycle you will be sep'ed? Word of mouth doesnt carry as much weight as paperwork? Did you sign a Pg 13 regarding PFA failures and a possible admin sep'ed? ( again talk with your LPO/Chief of your unit)
If your unit is willing to work with you, you have to BUST your ass. You need to think how you got so far out of standards that you cannot pass a PRT. You NEED to make them believe that you want this, tell them you will work on it, request remedial PT, and most of all, DO THE PT, GET within standards. Dont talk all this stuff to your chain of command, just to bomb the next prt. Learn to eat right, balance civillian commitments with the Navy. You still represent the Navy, even though you are just a "weekend warrior" ( i mean that with respect, not bashing Reservists)
The navy paid good money (including the $5,000) on you, gotta show them you are worth it.
Good luck!

One thing the others have not covered on the topic, there is a long standing process that has to be followed if they do try to ad sep you.
I have done TAD work in a BMC that did the paperwork for ad sep. If needed, PM for additional info on the process since you do have certain rights towards appeal and representation during the process...

Thank you for the advice. I am actually working really hard to get fit.
Meanwhile, I also came up with another question.
If I get admin sep while in reserve, is it gonna affect my active duty discharge status?
I already have honorable discharge from my active duty time.
...is it gonna affect my active duty discharge status?...
Good question, I believe it could, but not absolutely sure.
