My recruiter told me when you get to basic they will ask you if you ever played an instrument and if you do or did they will put you in a band unit or whatever its called. Is this true?
Yes there is a band at BootCamp.
They are called "900" divisions. In any given graduating group there will be one Division for band and rifle-tossers, one for state flags (915, baby!!), and one for "sideboys."
When you first get there and they divie up the fresh meat, they will ask you if you were NJROTC, Band, or know how to flip a rifle. Say yes, and there you are.
They call the 900 divisions "primadonnas that get to watch TV all day" but really, I think we got our butts beat MORE then everyone else. We got beat for the regular stuff, PLUS screwing up a graduation day drill. But thats just me.

Everyone always looks at the "S-Hot" folks and always whines about them.. You earn your time in 900.. take it from someone from Company(Old School) 972, Sand Diego, CA Aug 1984...
;-)
And no I did not steer the ARK!!

Yea, Chief...
You were just the one directing the all-mammal cleaning crew scrubbing the deck, lol!!

(Getting into the inclined rest position...)
Ready! :pup:
900 was fun. I was in a 900 division. They got a strict rules about time SIQ though. Wisdom teeth+well I got very sick (due to non-related reasons) = more than 3 days SIQ...
Zack;
What did you do in the 900 division?

Here's another "Special Company" member. Attended boot camp in San Diego, July - September 1972, and was in Co. 930, a member of the Drum and Bugle Corp. As some have said, being in a 900 company wasn't as easy as some think. We spent a lot of time practicing and marching for boot camp graduations, of which I marched in four before my own. The best perk of being in a 900 company was you got to leave boot camp and travel for parades and such. I was fortunate enough to attend a San Diego Padres baseball game, San Diego Chargers football preseason game and march in the halftime show of the first football game played at UNLV in Las Vegas. In Las Vegas, we actually had liberty till midnight, after the game. All of this while in boot camp, it was sweet.
Oh, by-the-way, I didn't steer the Ark, but, I sure enjoyed seeing it! :>)

I was in the drum and bugle corps also (beat the tri-tom) out in front of everyone. If memory serves me correctly, it delayed me a short time while we formed up our unit (922) in the 900 division. Small division, included rifle tossers, state flag unit and chorale.
We marched a lot, drilled a lot. Did a couple of super-dooper field days because some big whig was on base taking a tour with the Commanding Officer.
Got to get off base for one parade (beer afterwards (two-beer limit)) and had a blast. I would do it again in a heart beat.

At the time I was there, the training, PT and everything was the same as the other units at RTC. The band, extra drills and getting ready to perform at graduations were added training/preparation.
