Good afternoon Chief,

Quick intro to my background:

Former Marine Infantry Reserve ('99-'05)

OIF II Vet

EMT-B Certified, nowork experience in this field

Currently college student for Physical Therapy (hopefully starting classes next summer). Will have a bachelor's degree bySpring '06.

Signed up with Navy Reserves in '06 for 6 year contract (currently a GM3)

I want to be a Reserve 8404 Greenside HM for the Marines

Unit leaders (on both HM and GM sides)are more than willing to help me out in this area, but getting solid word on how to proceed is a little difficult.

My question boils down to this: howcan we make this happen as quickly as possible without interrupting my college classes? There is a slight rush as it looks like my old unit may be deploying next summer, and I really want to go with them.

Here is what I have been told so far:

Complete Basic Hospital Corps School (web based) through NKO

Apply for residency at Great Lakes Naval Hospital as a 2 weekAT through my unit

I have been told thattraining timelinescan be flexible to allow for continuation of my college courses.

Thank you for your time, Chief.

Here is the deal,

You have to go to the whole school, but like I told you on the phone, It is self paced. They do not break up our school. The Reserve 2 week one does not pertain to you.

You must get with your CCC and tell them you want to do a 1306/7 to be submitted to PERS to switch to the HM rating. It has to be endorsed by your local Chain of command etc.

I would get a interview or 2 and 2 letters of recommendation to add to your package from your local Navy Medical Community. They should be E-7 or above.

Hope this helps, have your career Counselor call me at the school house if they have any questions. (847) 688-3412 Ext 269.

Thanks for the help Chief, I'll get right on this.

Who does this information from NKO apply to?

TheNavy E-learningBasic HM A Schoolcurriculum consists ofweb based training and resident phase training at the Naval Hospital Corps School. The distance learning section is delivered via Navy E-Learning located on Navy Knowledge Online (NKO). Distance learning course provides the classroom curriculum of the HM A School. The distance-learning course contains 74 lessons consisting of approximately 100 hours of online learning. The purpose of the course is to establish a standardized medical training program that mirrors the resident training course for Hospital Corpsmen. The resident phase is a two-week Annual Training (AT) evolution at the Naval Hospital Corps School designed for Reserve HM's.

Also, if you go to these links:

Click here for a brochureon the HM A Reserve Training Program (https://www.nko.navy.mil/portal/download?lib_documentId=335200027)

you will find a pamphlet entitled "Reserve Hospital Corpsman Training Program for non-prior service Naval Reserve Hospital Corpsman". I am just getting confused because it seems like this should apply to me. Sorry, I tried to attach thepamphlet itself to this but the file size was too large.

They are talking about people who were broght in uner the old APG/NPS program. You were brought into the Navy becuase you had a specialty in that rate. You have to have practiced as a EMT or other specialty etc..

You are not eligible for it. To switch rates you must go to the full school.
