Hi everyone, this is my first post and right now I am stuck with some tough decisions. I am also looking for a little bit of information. I graduate high school this year, a few months after I turn 17. I had enough credits to skip my junior year and become a senior. I see myself as having an extra year I wouldn't have had if I didn't have those credits. Up until a few months ago, I wanted to go to college first in New Orleans where I live, because I have a scholarship there and then go active duty. I still want to go to college, but I want to join the Navy Reserves after high school graduation. I was wondering if using my year off to finish around 10 months of training(I'm an aspiring FMF Corpsman) would be a smart thing to do. I know the Needs of the Navy come first, but I would like to be stationed at the NAS JRB New Orleans, close to the college I have a scholarship for (UNO). I was wondering if mentioning my scholarship to my recruiter might give me more of a chance to be stationed in New Orleans.
I was also wondering if you could switch to Active Duty at any time or do you have to complete the number of years you signed up for Reserves.
Thank you,
AA Schmitt (USNSCC)

Hate to say it man..... but I'm willing to bet the odds of getting stationed at any one particular base are less than 1/100. Of course, the other folks here are much more knowledgeable than I.... but still. I don't see it happening.

Trigger,
due to the fact that you want to go into the reserves the chance of being stationed close to your college is not rare. im not saying you will be in new orleans but you could be close its all about what that reserve unit needs. also being in college you have to realize even though you are in classes doesnt mean that you get out of deployment. and if going active is what you wish you can go active without waiting out your reserve contract but beware it takes a very long time and im talking a year or so to go into active duty unless you are doing individual augmentation (IA) which is a deployment that you asked to go over seas with another unit. good luck and hope this helped you
