I am new to this site and I just have a few questions. I am 21 years old and just signed up to be a Navy Corpsmanand leave for boot on March 12. My question is there a way of becoming a corpsman with the Marines and staying with the Marines most of your time in the Navy? Also how do I go about getting with a Marine unit, is it just luck of the draw after A and C school? I want to go FMF but have no idea how to. Please help I am very nervous about the entire thing and dont have much time before I leave.

Ox,

Need a little more information before this question can be addressed correctly. Are you coming in Active Duty side, Reserve Side ie NCS or other program?

Let us know and will be able to assist you correctly.

Crazycajun,

I have signed up for active duty for five years but I will probably follow the rest my family and trygoing for the long haul of 20+. All the men in my family are Marines, Father is retired Vietnam vet. then two uncles retired Marines and both of my brothers are Marines right now. I will be the first to venture out to another service but I want to still stay in the Marine side of things.

Ox,

Ok, it shouldn't be that hard to get the FMF if you want it. We need HMs withing the Marine Corps. One way you could almost ensure you stay FMF is attempting to go Recon, these guys are pretty much stay FMF.

With that said, I've been with the Marine Corps for the past 10 years, I'm now being told that I need to do my shore rotation. When the Force Master Chief and Marine Forces Command Master Chief were down to address us, they pointed out that good sea/shore rotation will be looked at in the near future. So, keep in mind at sometime you will need to do shore duty time in between being with the Marine Corps. Though it should be easy to get back when you want to.

Hope this answers your question, if you need more info, please let us know.

But even then you can pick a "SHORE" rotation that supports the Marine Corps.. I.e FMSS instructor, Billeted to a MCRD etc...

If you want to stay around the "JARS" you can.. should not be a problem..

Ok Ox, here's some input from a recently retired FMF Chief who spent the better part of the past 20 years with the Marine Corps (and Crazy Cajun can attest to it!)

At your first opportunity, try out for the Recon community. There will never be a dull moment, you will get to see the world, make plenty of extra money, and 20 years from now you won't regret it at all.

If Recon isn't your cup of tea, then start with a MarDiv tour to get the real "taste" of the Marine Corps and you can decide from there.

Whatever you do, do NOT get stuck on a shore tour in CONUS for your first assignment, it will ruin your motivation to say the least.

I agree with both HMC's.. Trust me.. I remember the day..

SgtMaj Saunders talking to me right before I left to go to NHGL..

"Chief... Your gonna hate a BUMED command.."

I asked "why?"

"The Petty Politics, and they wouldn't know their ass if it was handed to him.. They would want to have a meeting and a P.A.T Team and a group hug.."

Let's just say on hindsight..

All he said was true..

And I am not the hugging type..
