I will start basic training in July. Then I will go to A school, and FMSS there after. This means, that for 5 or six months I will depend on military pay, which is not quite as much as what I make in the civilian world. I signed up under NPSB. My question is:
Is there help out there to soften the financial blow a little bit? Are there programs that suspend loan payments for the duration of active duty and so forth?
I searched but did not come up with much.
Thank you guys for your help!

There are some things to help. One thing you can do is reduce the interest rate on your loans to 6%. Ask your recruiter for a letter. They should have a pre typed letter that you can send to your credit card companies or banks saying that you are in the military and they will lower your interest rate to 6%. I believe that only works for debts you have before joining. You will graduate boot camp with approx. $1500. just depends on if your E-1 or E-3 and if you have any family. Make sure you have someone to pay your debts while your in boot though, you won't have access to a computer or phone for that kind of stuff. I don't think that there are programs that totally suspend payments while on active duty but you can always call your debtor and ask. Hope this helps some, but there are people on here who know the details better than me.

I got a deferment on my federal student loans for active-duty military service. The deferment is for three years. Maybe you could request something like that for your loans.
