View Full Version : PO1 life at NHCS?
Afternoon all,
This is mainly for the instructors and/or Chiefs and above out there. No offense to anyone else...
What is life at NHCS like for a PO1 fleet returnee? Obviously I'm not the usual studet who comes thru Corpsman school, more the exception than the rule I guess. Professionally and personally I'm ready to be the 1st Class Petty Officer example that I have to be but at the same time am I still just another student, like the boot who came from across the street at RTC or the PO3 fleet returnee who has been in 4 years and thinks he is salty?
In the classroom I would be expected to be treated like any other studet as I am there to learn the same info as any other student but I woud still think there would be a little RHIP by being a 14 year PO1?
Will I be subject to living in the barracks or the BEQ? Will I be subject to room and uniform inspections, liberty restrictions, watch standing, phases and the restrictions that come with them? Road construction and parking aside would I be able to bring my car? 4.5 months without a car would drive me nuts...lol.
I do not want to come across as saying that I'm any more special than any other student but I'm very curious as to how things would be and how I would be treated.

AO1,
Please understand, While Tony (8404) was not a Corpsman, but was a Marine, He has educated himself enough to where he could be a CCC @ any medical Command. Any info he gives are facts from myself as well as PegasusHM.
You had better learn that dealing with the medical community you will often deal with folks who are not HM's. To be honest there are more Civ's who work with us then there are Doc's now. Just the nature of our business.
Anyways, 8404 has directed you in the right direction, I would follow his guidance, trust me in that if you ask him a question that he does not know, he does not shoot from the hip, but researches it and gets back to the questioner post haste with the "FACTS".
Semper Gumby,

AO1,
The biggest thing that you need to have is humility while attending the school. We have had a few "bad" experiences with PO1 students. Yes, you will have some "RHIP" as you put it, but do not think that the considerations that are given to you can not be taken away. Y ou will be expected to lead and will be held accountable. Yes, you will have uniform inspections, PT, room inspections just like all other students. You will be held to the same standard, if not more so. Above all, remember that you are a First Class Petty Officer! You will set the example for all other students, not just in your class, but at the school. You must be above reproach and lead from the front. Just remember that you are there to learn and take in as much as you can.
I plan on doing just that, and trust me you will not be getting a earth sack PO1. I plan on being the example, the leader, the mentor, and most important...the student.

AO1, i recall when i went thru there was an SO1 there, not saying that the dinner plate trident made him get away with more, and from what i can rememeber he was an EXTREMLY good student, i think he acctually performed the uniform inspections in the morning just to help the Intructors out and get everyone to class on time. Glad you chose the best rate in the navy AO1 and by the sounds of your postings i would be more then happy to have you as an LPO out here at any naval hospital. Good luck with the classes and tests, and as always OORAH!
Quick question then...and maybe this is something to post offline. I've accepted the fact that I'll be in the barracks...no problem, do I get my own room? LOL.
Also, will I be put on a meal pass? I'm wondering about losing my BAS and if I'll get Family Seperation Allowance also?
AO1;
With regards to your 'own' room. That all depends on the number of students at the school. Approximately 5 weeks ago, the school had over 1,600 students in attendance. Some of the students were having to be billeted at the barracks referred to as the 'Cole', located at the north part of the base.
So, if it's packed, you will have to share a room, if it's not, you will, as a Petty Officer First Class, get your own room.

I can sympathize with this one. I caught that you were at NAS Whidbey...I just transfered from there to Bremerton...a one for one swap that we were told "Tuesday get ready to ship out Friday" That was back in November...February comes around and we make the swap but it wasnt done at PERS? level and so we are both at our new commands unable to check in because orders are not printed....I am TAD in records until I can check in and go back to surgery
Hang in there...it will happen before you know it
Good luck in school as well!
Im afraid im gonna have to get my 2 cents in on this one.I was neither an instructor nor a Cheif PO during my service, but i was a HM2 upon my discharge.and i earned that rank starting at HA.
please dont take thisthe wrong way but it sounded to me like your looking for special treatment because of your rank.youre just now becoming a Corpsman.dont you think that you of all men should want to set an example.do you expect the instructors to roll out a red carpet for you.i in no way mean to degrade you or disrepect you and its been a long time since i was in the Navy, but i can tell you this there was never a time in my enlistment when i expected special treatment.you may graduate a Corpsman but if you ever want to be a "Doc"it takes more than stripes on your arm.good luck in A school and dont take this as an attack its just friendly advice.
to be a good leader you have to be a good follower.
Echo,
I don't think he's coming across that way, just trying to get an idea of what life is like back at a school house as a senior. I'm pretty sure after being on here for a while, AO1 gets the idea about how seriously we take our job, and he's ready for that challenge.
yeah youre right indy.i just read my post and guess i was having a bad moment.i do commend him for his choice.AO1 you made a good choice .i wish you the best.stay away from waukeeghan, its bad joo joo...

Thanks Indy...
Echo, in no means do I expect special treatment based on my rank...I've been around the block more than a couple of times in my 14 years of Navy service, I know how things work. :p
I know the difference between a First Class Petty Officer and a E-6, just like there are Chief Petty Officers and there are E-7's. And there are Corpsman and there are "Doc's". I'm ready to be a "Doc" and will do what it takes to get there. ;)
Thanks for the well wishes...
HM1 select...lol
Just make us proud HM1(sel)!!!
You'll do fine, I'm sure of it.
Well just a quick update. Came into work this morning and had an email from my CCC waiting for me....said for me to come over and see him so we could talk about somethings. Never a good thing. So we'll see what happens at 1400 when I see him.

Goodluck. Just keep in the back of your mind that these "boots" know that just because you have rank doesn't mean that you're not a piece of crap. Don't think that they are not watching your every move for both guidance and critisism. You cant expect anything that you don't do. Don't think that just because you're a First Class that you don't have to abide by the rules. There is a big difference here between staff and student. And, YES, you will have to share a room with "boots". You will be able to have a POV. You will lose your BAS. You will be able to collect FSA. Goodluck Shipmate.
HM3, don't need a lecture from you on how I will be precieved by junior personnel like yourself...boot or not. I know what is expected of me and I know how to lead from the front and by example shipmate....I've been doing it for a long time now, but thanks for the advice.
However it looks as if I have hit a wall with my package, my conversion has been denied by PERS at the forced conversion desk...not exactly sure why when I know they have over 40 PTS billets available. So for now I am at a standstill on becoming a Corpsman...
...and if the Navy doesn't want me then perhaps the Army needs some medics via the Blue to Green program.
I precieve an elitest attitude, AO1, I think that is what is turning some of us off, respectfully.

Well I was told to expect to be treated like crap by the senior personnel and that way if they treated you any better than dog crap on their shoe you would be in for a pleasant surprise

An elitest attitude? Can you expand on that and tell me how I am being precieved as "elitest"? I'm in no way suggesting at all that I'm better than anyone else here, Master Chief or Recruit....it doesn't matter. The only thing I take execption to is being lectured about what is expected by me by someone who has to walk the walk themselves before they can talk the talk. I'm not better than you but I am higher on the food chain than you and I fought my way to get there along with anyone else who holds the same rank or higher. I wasn't born a 1st Class, I was an airman recruit just like some of you...I did my share of buffing decks, I did my share of hauling trash, working parties, cleaning stations, mess deck time.
I've been in the Navy (and Army) for going on 15 years now....almost as long as some of the younger readers here have been alive. I'm not saying that to say I'm better than you it's just a simple fact...I'm a professional and a technical expert in my field and will be the same in any other field I happen to move into.
I don't want this to turn into a book but some of you really need a reality check, respectfully of course....you've certainly grown up in a different Navy than I have.

I am going to close this thread as soon as I write this....
I am calling all the folks junior to PO1 on the carpet on this.. PO1's should and will get more respect out of NHCS if you attend. They have done the walk and can talk the talk. They are Warfare qualified etc..
But understand it is still a school, The PO1 will be held in a higher regard due to his leadership position. You have no idea the stressor's that a PO1 or a leader have to deal with.
PO1 I hope you make it in.. PM me if you have any questions.. Folks respect those who have gone before you. While he is not a HM, he is a 1st Class Petty Officer with a Ass load of experience.
Good Luck to all..
