son has leave at christmas and then deploys in March. Visited him in 29 palms and saw that he didn't have a lot space plus I suspect everything will be coming back when he goes overseas. I thought pelican case for his laptop possibly orgift certificate for Las vegas, any other Ideals would be appreciated.
I bought my son a nice Television for his barracks upon his arrival/reporting into 29 Palms. You have to subscribe to some kind of cable TV or satellite service for any kind of shows. Not sure if there is storage facilities at 29 for deployed personnel personal effects.
I know what you mean, space is a commodity in those barracks and they share it with one other person (at least mine did).
Does he have a vehicle there?

he's not much of TV guy. Weekends he says he is catching up on sleep and studying for FMF pin. Doesn't have a car. He is waiting to get back from deployment to get one. Catches rides with guys in the platoon.

Dear Dad,
My Doc just got back from Iraq a few weeks ago. He got his FMF over there and was probably one of the most exciting times of his life. He is so proud and we are so proud of him. Tell your Doc to study hard and our prayers are with him.
We are taking our Doc on a cruise over the holidays. I also bought him a Wii and all the guys just love it. Is your son at Le Jeune? Oh, I bought my son a mattress pad thing to put on his bunk, his last bunk mate had one and he got one and now everyone has one. It is a pillow topper. It makes hanging out and studying a little bit more comfortable.
Stay strong Dad, my prayers are your family!!

Anytime you get your soldier a gift that he/she can take along is appreciated. It gives that "taste of home" feel. And when those "I miss home blues" kick in they can either dig into their pocket, or look on a shelf and realize why and what they are doing is for a reason....and that they are LOVED and APPRECIATED!

He's at the Stumps and at Viper now. He comes home for Christmas and we are trying to do some special things. He can play hockey if he wants, Got him tickets for his favorite rock group. Trying to find a case for his laptop with the 20'' screen. Gearing the family to send a package a week with his favorite snacks and socks ie.. Is a multitool helpfuland if so which one, is there a special flashlight or something like that that would be helpful.I figure everything he can't take with him goes to storage or back home.
When my son left on his deployment (Sept 2007 - Apr 2008) everything he had in his barracks room at Camp Lejeune had to be either in storage or shipped home. Good thing he and his dad were driving the car we took to him back to Michigan. Everything he owned that wasn't going with him was jammed in the Honda and transported back here for storage until he got back - although he STILL hasn't really gone through it to see what he wants to keep or get rid of (hmmm may be a project for him when he comes home over the holidays this year) :D

He got a break from Viper and called. He is planning on storing his stuff with a buddy. Is a multi tool like a leatherman any use when deployed, and if so, which model. Is there a watch that lends itself to the job.

Not really Alaska.. I would go to a Bass Pro or a place like that and just tell em your son is going to be out in a "HARSH ENVIRONMENT" and what is the best one. All leatherman's are well built but get the one that can handle all the sand and grit.
Look for one with a "GOOD BLADE" on it and also has some good working "SCISSOR's" for cutting crap fast.
Good Luck! And happy Holidays, Good to see you again!

I got him the gerber compact. Blade pliers, screwdriver and fiskar scissors. Let him pick it out. It is flat and has a belt pouch. He also wanted a trauma bag that I ordered online. Couple movies and I bottle of Baileys I am done with his shopping. His blood must of thinned in the stumps because its a balmy 20 degrees and he is complaining about the cold.

This made me laugh because I was thinking the same thing about Dan and his being in North Carolina all this time because his is complaining about the cold here in Michigan
Thanks for the chuckle
Happy Holidays
