I am graduating NHCS in Dec. and I have orders to Avt school. I really have no idea what the NEC intails. I was wondering someone could tell me alittle bit about the school, job, possible duty stations and anything else you can think I might want to know. I searched the site and found alittle but not much. Appreciate it.
AVT or aerospace medical technician are responsible for squadron readiness, physical exams and the administrative side of keeping the squadron medically deployable at all times.
You are assigned to the stations branch medical clinic and will work out of there the majority of your time for sea duty and all the time for shore duty.
Are you interested in search and rescue and flying? If so, volunteer and ask for follow on orders for 8401, Search and Rescue MEdical Technician. You do everything above in addition to becoming a fully qualified air crewman in a helicopter.
Any other questions?

How often would I be deployed? Where can expect to be stationed? Do I get any kind of choice on orders or is it just at random? How is the school itself compared to NHCS?
Typical 4 year orders to a squadron will have two 6-7 month cruises and a dozen or so smaller work ups (2-7 weeks long). Its a hit or miss where their schedules are when you get there. Im no expert overall on all squadrons, just from what I have seen with the ones attached to my carrier air group (both fixed and rotory wing). You can also be an avt aboard an aircraft carrier, a shore based hospital or a marine squadron.
You will be given a dream sheet of where you want to go and what will be open. There is some give, but if there are dead set jobs that have to be filled, is the schoolhouse that gets them.
The school is realitivly easy, just a lot of information and a basis to get started taking care of your squadron. PT 3-4 times a week, uniform inspections, room inspections, quizes and exams, all typical navy school stuff.
