View Full Version : what is duty like?
I scored a 91 on the practice asvab, and was told that I could pretty much have my choice of careers in the navy.I'm really interested in becoming a corpsman. I've got a completely clean record and i've spent two years in college. Gradually, I realized that college isnt for me. But anyway, I was wondering what you actually do as a corpsman? Is it much like being a paramedic? What sort of training can I expect in becoming part of the FMF? Don't get me wrong, i've seen plenty of movies but hollywood tends to get things wrong.

Wow, I'm suprised that no one has gotten back to you about this until now. Well telling you exactly what you would be doing as a corpsman is impossible but, I can give you some ideas.
First, you have have to attend boot camp ... then navy hospital corps school ... and then field medical services school to become a 8404 or corpsman with the fleet marine force.
Then once you are a corpsman, depending on where you are ... you will be running sick call (thats the daily grind of all the appointments, and walks in with misc. illnesses and injuries). Plus you will have to make sure everyones immunizations are up to date. The command will usually hold mass shot ex's. Then you will be in charge of record maintance (making sure everything is up to date and all forms are in the correct order), you will be responsible to be on stand by during PT and at the range to provide safety coverage incase something happens. You go to the field, render field care (foot injuries, sickness, cuts, bangs, and bruises).
Plus tons of other stuff that I couldn't even type in one night. Its an awesome experience and I wouldn't have went any other way.
