NREMT Board of Directors Approves Examination Option in Lieu of Refresher and Additional Continuing Education for Re-certification
Posted 01/02/07
In November 2006, the NREMT Board of Directors approved the option to validate continued cognitive competency by passing the newly introduced computer based test established by the NREMT. Nationally Registered EMTs (Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic) can take the NREMT Computer Based Test (CBT) in lieu of completing a refresher and the additional continuing education hours prescribed in the NREMT re-certification requirements.

For an NREMT due to re-register on March 31, 2007, if he/she chooses to use passing the test to demonstrate competency, he/she must:

Establish an NREMT account on the NREMT website

Complete a re-registration examination application, (after validating eligibility with your NREMT number) and pay the fee on the website

Receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) Letter from the NREMT

Follow the directions contained in the ATT Letter to schedule an exam

Take the examination between 1/2/07 and 3/31/07 (one attempt only)

Pass the examination

Receive and abbreviated re-registration form from the NREMT

Return the form by March 31, 2007

Only one attempt of the examination is permissible. If a person fails the examination he/she will be required by the NREMT to complete all refresher and continuing education requirements by March 31 in order to be eligible to re-certify. Taking the examination is an option and not a requirement at this time.

NREMTs who expire in 2008 may challenge the examination (in lieu of completing a refresher and additional continuing education) beginning October 1, 2007.

If the employer or state requires an NREMT to possess their National Registry card before March 31, he/she will need to successfully complete the exam process by February 15 of the expiring year.

Please keep informed about this process by checking our website.

They're smoking some bad crack if they think I'm going to willingly take that stupid test again...
Now it's just panic mode catching up for my 32 hours of extra CEU's I need... (all of the courses I needed and was planning to sign up for were being held while I was laid up in bed)
Anyone know if the NREMT accepts corps school for CE?

If HM school still has the emt unit in it, then yes, those lectures will count. Knock out BLS, ALCS, PALS, PHTLS/BTLS. Doing those 5 classes alone will hit all your CEs.

If you read your emt book, that 'stupid test' will save you a lot of time. The only reason to be afraid of it is if you dont study and dont practice.

Thanks HM2. This is my first NREMT-I recert (only had state certifications before), and having to catch up after I had to drop the PALS and PHTLS classes because I couldn't attend is stressing a little bit!

I am in the same boat and that's why I am glad I came across this info ;)

You see, I was able to knock out my Refresher Course, however the CE is a different story. I also was unable to get a clear answer from the National Registry folks as to whether HM "A" School would count.

I am currently looking into setting up a testing date on a Saturday in Chicago so I can maintain my cert.

Regarding continuing education, how do poeple employed as Paramedics in the civilian world usually keep up with their CE requirements while training in the Navy Reserve? I mean, besides the credit they get for A School.
Furthermore, does the Navy offer "educational inservices" for corpsmen and other medical personnel to keep up with knowledge and skills?

All the time. When I carried my Certification I constantly went through classes to keep my hours up.

Here in Maryland, the state fire training institute (run by Univ of MD) offers a 32 hour "Paramedic Refresher". That will take care of the ALS portion of the requirement. Then you just have to get your ACLS, BTLS (PHTLS, PALS, and CPR renewed. That covers the requirements.
