Becoming a nurse and becoming a physician (http://www.navy.com/careers/officer/healthcare/physicians/)are two different animals. It is "possible" to get selected for commissioning as a Nurse Corps officer via the STA-21 (https://www.sta-21.navy.mil)program, but the only Corpsman I personally know who has become a full fledged doctor did so using his MGIB benefits after leaving the military. (plenty HM's move on to otherthings, butto my knowledge seldom Dr)Furthermore, 'IF' selected for STA-21, upon completion of your Bachelor of Science Nursing degree, you must successfully pass the National Council Licensing Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) as required by SECNAVINST 1120.6
Instead of becoming an enlisted HM (https://www.navycollege.navy.mil/rates/template.cfm?rate=HM), I would look into medical school (http://www.usuhs.mil/medschool/somfaq.html#e)via NROTC or some other commissioned officer program (http://www.navy.com/careers/officerplanner/).

Plus, what your recruiter is failing to tell you is, not everyone gets selected for the STA-21 program. Its going to be a tight race, and you need to have all of your ducks in a line. Its possible for you to get selected but it might take a few years and resubmission of your package to do so. I would see about going to medical school and becoming a doctor before joining the navy.

Interesting thread. Perhaps my story will help. I was enlisted many years ago. After I got out I went to school finished a bachelors degree and eventually got accepted to Medical School. As soon as I was accepted I had the opportunity to rejoin the Navy, Army, or Air Force with an immediate commission. They offered to pay for medical school andall associated paraphanaila..i.e. books pencils etc. and a paycheck. The payback was 8 years military time after I graduated from medical school. It was peacetime and I'd done my 4 years during Viet Nam. So I opted to stay a civilian doc. I sometimes regret that I didn't 'reup' but it is what it is.If you do get out and have thebackground as a Corpsman you will have a lot of brownie points when applying to medical school. In factany military time, (especially Navy/Marine)will give you the backbone to 'go for it'. So if you really want it, then go get it. There is no obstacle thatthey can throw at you that you cannot climb ifyou'vebeen through FMSS orMarine Recruit Depot.
