Hey guys,

I posted a few weeks ago to get some information. Just as a recap, I'm shipping out May 30 for the USNR as a Navy Corpsman going green side, and yes I'am going to go through FMSS.

Had a few questions that I'd appreciate as much info on as is possible.

1.) While going through Corpsman training after Boot Camp, A School I believe that it is called, will I be allowed to have a vehicle?

2.) When going through FMSS will I be going through the same thing as Marine Corps Boot Camp? My dad is a MArine and says that it is nowhere near as difficult and views it as inferior training.

3.) Is it true that I get to choose what type of unit I'am attached to?

4.) Is it possible for me to choose to try to get into Recon, of Force Recon while staying in Reserves?

5.) If at some point I decide to activate and want to try to become a BUD in the Seal training program, do I have to take a lateral move back to the "blue" side of the Corpsman MOS in order to do so?

6.) Of the by monthly annual pay recieved while in Boot Camp, how much of it actually is spent in boot camp normally?

7.) I've already done alot of the memorizing that is required (ie. The Sailor's Creed, The Phonetic Alphabet, and The 11 General Orders), would you recommend that I do any other memorization prior to shipping out?

Sorry for the length and number of questions guys, I'm simply trying to literally be the best prepared for the upcoming trainging. I was raised by a career Marine and will not allow myself to be anything less than the very best that I can be, both for myself, and for the Marines I hope to soon be responcible for.

Thanx, Solidis

Solidis,

Hey brother I'll attempt to answer the questions the best of my ability!

1. I know back 18 years ago we were allowed vehiciles though that could have changed, drop Chief Crone an email because he is currently at Hospital Corps School and he'll be able to answer this question.

2. Yes, FMSS is not Marine Corps boot camp. It's designed to get you in touch with the Marine Corps not make you a Marine. Though, your dad should also know that a Corpsman with the Marines is supposed to be able to do what the Marines do, plus taking care of the Marines at the same time. The Marines already have their 'Few Proud Men', "Navy Corpsmen"! No, disrespect to the Marine Corps, Corpsmen do have to hike along side the Marines, fix them and then catch up to them!

3. As a reservist depending on where you live and how your reserve unit is, you may have a choise. When I was a reservist back in the Mid 80's I was drilling at a Navy & Marine Corps Reserve Center. I served with the Blue Navy and the Marine Corps at the same center.

4. This one is tough, you'd probably have to talk to the Recon Community to have them answer this question.

5. If you become Recon, which is really needs people at the present time. It may be hard to get to BUDs this way. Though I don't think it will be impossible, though with Recon needing people it may be harder. If that's where you want to end up then, don't let this stop you. Even when you are with the Marine Corps you still are Navy Personnel so, BUDS is a Navy Program and you will still be able to go, I know of several 8404 corpsmen go to BUDS.

6. I'm much to old to remember this one...LOL Though, you should only have to pay for personal hygiene stuff (Soap/Haircuts/etc.)and probably uniform items. I don't remember spending much money in bootcamp though that was back in '85.

7. That's a great start, you may also want to know "Anchor's Away"and the "Navy Hymn".

Hopefully this helps you some. Stay strong and focused!

Thanx for the input.

To be entirely honest, I'd be just as happy serving with Recon or Force as I would serving with the Seals. From what I've been told though, serving with Recon, as with the Seals, takes literally years of training. I'd love to be apart of Recon.

Another quick question if I may though, I spoke to a former Navy Captain a few days ago about whether or not I needed to be overly concerned about my physical fitness prior to going into Boot Camp, No FMSS. He asked my curreny fitness level, I responded that I stay in moderate shape, and can always run atleast 2 miles none stop. He told me not to worry about it then. Do you agree? Or should I begin running to get into better shape?

I know that FMSS is going to kick my butt, in that regard I'am looking forward to it. Any pointers in reference to that? I was told that you learn everything that Marines have to learn. Is that true?

Thanx, Nick

I hate to break it to the CAPT who has not served a day with the FMF (if he is a line officer).

Shipmate you need to get yourself to where you can run at least 3 miles. Bootcamp will get you "OUT OF SHAPE" and then we need to get you back "IN SHAPE" at Corps School".

Most HM's out of Corps School don't sit on ships etc.. They sit in the sand and go on 25 mile long hikes in the sand/woods/swamps or where ever the platoon commander wants you to go..

;-)

Get the drift.. Get in shape.. Also learn how to do Pull-ups as well as push ups.. Don't bulk up but get in "AEROBIC" shape.

Hope this helps..

I want all of that sir. I want to be in the best shape of my life. I'm beginning to run, and push ups, pull ups, and crunches I'm beginning to do as well. I dont intend to be slack in anyway. That is why I choose to become a corpsman serving with marines. I wanted to be with the best.

Do you happen to know if they allow a vehicle at A school?

Thanx, Solidis

Solidis,

Not unless you are a "FLEET RETURNEE". You are there to learn, plain and simple. Try to not let the distractions get to you. We lose sailors every day because they think Great Lakes is the party place. It can get you in trouble and out of our school, or out of the Navy. I Would not recommend a car until you are stationed at your first "REAL" duty station.

Also if you have a car, and are making payments on it, you might want to get rid of it prior to getting in and put the money in the bank. A car payment can get you out of overseas orders due to Financial liablilities.

I dont party now sir, I neither drink nor do I smoke anything. I was curious about having a car because I lived in Illinois in the Peori area, about 2 hours south of Chicago, and was wondering if during the weekends and nightsthat I was told during which I was off, whatever that means, I would be able to visit friends and family which are still in the area.

I fully understand that there is only one reason for why I will be. And to that end I'am dedicated. Thank you for the input sir.

I never had any time to drive. I would recommend focusing on your training and worry about going home afterwards. JMO
