Ok all you salty sailors....please help! Yesterday I received word that in 2 weeks I am transferring to USS SHOUP in Everett, WA. Im an HM3 going work under an HM2 that is leaving the ship in May, and a HMC IDC. They're not sending me to Baby Doc class because it's a hotfill billet and since they need an HM badly.....any adivce or tips? I'm very excited yet a bit nervous that I've never been shipboard or even to the Northwest....all replies greatly appreciated! THANK YOU:):):):):):):):):)

Don't worry about missing out on the Baby Doc course. It is a great course, but you'll do fine without it. Many junior shipboard HMs (me included) got along OK before the course started.
The above advice is good. Follow the lead of the Chief. If the HM2 isn't leaving until May, you should get a good turnover. This turnover is more important than it may sound. He/she not only should cover what your shipboard and medical duties are but should introduce you to his/her associates in the other departments that help get things done. Some of the things these people can get done for you are: Give you cleaning gear when everyone else is told, "We're out." Get you early chow so you can get a head start on a nooner.
Take your first few days to learn your way around the ship and get to know who's who. Learn who the key officers and Chiefs are. The Master Chief and CO and XO for sure. Learn the basic duties first. Pay close attention to basic damage control. Learn it and get qualified before worrying about ESWS. They will shove all the PQS books in your face at once. Don't panic. You'll be be one of the smartest Sailors aboard. You can handle it.
The HMC and HM2 should let you know what to bring and what to expect before you get there. This information will only get you to the quarterdeck. After you recover from the shock and awe of the craziness of your new life, just take it a day at a time and enjoy it. The best years of my career were spent aboard ship.
Also, did you receive my e-mail response to you?
Good for you. I was a Destroyer sailor for three years as a non-rate, then struck for HM. Life on a Tin-Can is great, plus when you go to a liberty port, you can pull pierside vice having a launch. ESWS should be cake with a little effort. Learn your damage control, and try not to get too lost your first few days.
Best days of my life were on USS Moosbrugger DD-980. I would have loved to serve on a Burke class. Looks like your ship has a pretty nice website as well. http://www.shoup.navy.mil
Good Luck.

I look at it this way with the warfare pin. The bigger the ship, the more you learn. ;-)
SO obnoxio is right, you should be able to knock this out no sweat. The only thing smaller are the minesweeps. ;-0

I knew a striker in my HM class, who incedently is now a LTJG, who got his ESWS as an E-3 on a minesweep. He said it took 2 months, start to finish. E-3 and below on my ship were not allowed to get ESWS back then, during the whole ESWS Sweater debacle.
On a DDG, I would say three to five months for getting her PQS signed off, watchstanding, etc. Then take the board and get your pin.

Congratulation on getting orders to USS SHoup. I comision this destroyer back in 2002 when i was an e-3. I left the ship in 2004 to go to medical lab C scholl in porstmouth. Everett is not a bad duty station, the clinic is really help to the ships. The only thing that sucks is parking on base as you have to walk around 1mile from the parking lot to the pier if the transportation vehicles are not running. PacNorwest have plenty to do, a lot of outdoor stuff. You will be working with HMCS Cruzan if she still onboard by the time you repor t there She is an exellent teacher and very knowlaedgeble. Just make sure to get all your quals out of the way so you can concentrate on your job later on. Being on a small boy the crew will look to you for help so be sure to learn as much as you can and try to challange yourself. You know your doing your job when your IDC is chilling in the chiefs mess all day.
