how does sea duty and shore duty work out?

I dont quite understand how this works. After corpsman school, when i get my orders to report to my duty station, does that mean that is my permanent duty station for the rest of my contract? If i am stationed at a hospital is that considered shore duty? How does the shore duty, sea duty work? DO i have to do both sea and shore duty in my term, if so does that mean that i will have to go somewhere else during my contract?

Your first duty station is typically 2 years and yes this should be your Permanent Duty Station unless from Corps School you go to Field Med or a "C" School. But the Sea-Shore rotation is supposed to be 3 years at each. So if you start out at a hospital then you should get orders to some sort of deploying unit.

I am wanting to go FMF, but i have heard from some people that have just graduated from Corpsman school recentley and some of them haven't got to go to FMTB. I guess i will find out when i get there. THe only bad thing about getting to go to FMF school is that it will be longer time i will not get live my wife and son. I am already dreading RTC for that reason alone. So its kind of like if dont get to go to FMTB i get to have my family back, which is awesome, but i will not be doing the job i want to do. :(

Thats a decision you will have to make. I wish that I had gone to Field Med after Corps School, but I was sent to a shore command. Its only an additional 2 months and time goes by pretty quick. Sooner or later you will have to go to Field Med so you might as well request it if its what you want to do! Trust me, if you want Green side you wont be happy on blue while you wait your 2 years for orders!

Trust me i want to go. I just think some of the corpsman i have been talking to didn't push it hard enough to get FMTB. I would think if you bust your ass for the instructors at Corpsman school, and do while you are there and dont mess around, i think they would pull some strings for ya and get you in. Good thing about me being older going into this, i know what i have to do to succeed and advance faster. I have my family and i'm not a big partier, so my nights and weekends are going to be spent in my room studying and talking to my wife and son over the phone or internet. Just like people going to college, i cant stand hearing how they partied to much and ended up failing and getting kicked out. This is just the same, you are there to learn and get an education. YOu have all the time in the world to do what you want when you get done.

Obtaining orders to FMTB out of Corpsman 'A' school depends on the needs of the Navy, budgeting and open seats. Towards the latter part of the fiscal year, seat availability diminishes.

You will only get FMTB in your contract if your "RESERVE" active duty does not do this.

I leave for RTC 20090202 so i should be out of there by the end of March, then 3 months in Corpsman school, so i am looking at end of June to go to FMTB if it is available. So do i need to talk to my recruiter about getting my contract to read FMF, i am pretty sure i have seen on here before that i cant get that on my contract?

If you are active duty you can't get FMTB in your contract, only reserves can get that. Really though, you should have asked for it before you signed the contract. Now you are just going to have to put it on your dream sheet at the end of A School and hope you get it.
