When i got out in 1995 disability severence from the Navy was figured as base pay times 2 times the number of years served,..how is it figured now. My brother is on med hold possibly pending a med discharge with disabilities and he's not sure how that's figured,..plus he has 23 years in and is also curious if he will be able to get the disability severence check from the Navy and his full pension. He's not concerned with filing with the VA as he has 23 years in. Any Help win answering this would be appreciated.

While we are waiting for a response from Da-Chief, you may want to look at this thread, where disability is discussed. You can also send Da-Chief an email or PM from his profile page.

Speedbump,
There are a lot of variables in this answer. I need some info..
A. Active or Reserve
B. Was it split time, I.e Some active some reserve or all active or all reserve?
C. Combat? Did he see any combat or was he in the theater?
D. He's getting out with 23 years of service so in other words he should be retiring and putting in for his disability?
E. Is there any NJP involved in this? Is he getting forced out for legal reasons?
F. Is he getting forced out due to a combat injury?
And much much more.. but lets go from there..
:-)

You can do a Google search and get all the referenced instructions dealing with MedBoards right off the Internet. Everything is right there.
Sometimes it is better to go through the VA and just grab their "disability." It really depends on what the projected final disability rating would be. Besides that, retiring with a Med Discharge can be a pain. You get put on the TDRL or the PDRL and there are regular exams, rates can change, and you can be found to be fit to move from the DRL (Disabled Retired List) to the regular retired list and you then have to fight it out with the VA....
Be careful and go through the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), AMVets, or some other organization. I don't recommend VFW's. Don't try doing it all on your own for you WILL get hosed.
