well..The good news....

you have a roof over your head and you have walls..

There are phones and you are allowed to have a Cell phone and allowed to use it when your not in the school house.

Internet access is can be gotten at the Base library or at the loft. One other place as well but it slips my mind.

You can of course have your own laptop and if you have your own Internet Access I.e remote access Depending on the service you can get internet.

Once out of Boot, You have to phase up to get to regular Liberty etc...

This changes all the time, so really this is all I feel comfortable giving now, you might want to PM PegasusHM as he is a instructor there and can give you the most current gouge.

Good LucK!

I just wanted to know how the living situation were at A school (hm). How many people per room.

I'll add a little more.

The amount of students per room, has to do with how many Sailors attending 'A' school. So, if the school is at capacity, I would think you can expect 2 or more Sailors to a compartment.

Additionally, room cleanliness is everyone's responsibility who are living in that compartment! 3 room inspection failures and you could be considered for being dropped out of Corps School. :chat:

There are no excuses, such as "that was his job to do" or "those are not my things". You ALL share in the responsibility for keeping the rooms orderly and cleaned at all times.

There is no "I" in Team!

I was in the infamous BEQ 129 in corps school in the summer of 2007. The BEQ is old, smells funny, has roaches but I loved it. Me and my friends have a saying, "You haven't gone to Corps School unless you stayed in 129." And also the firedrill went off every single night it seemed like!!!

Room situations depend. When I got their I had one roomate when I graduate I had 3. The maximum you can have is 4. Your room is pretty small it consists of 2 bunkbeds and each person has a wall-locker to put all your stuff in. Also each room has a refigerator/freezer and a microwave. You can have wireless internet in your room, and cell phones are aloud. If you dont have a cell phone their are a bunch of payphones in the barracks. Some barracks rooms have their own heads, I think BEQ 131 does. BEQ 129 (all male) barracks has community heads.

I remember how I hated the living situating in A School, then I was sent to Field Med School and It was back to the boot camp style openbay barracks!!! I would take living with 3 other people in a closed room anytime then living with 60 other people in an open-bay barracks.

Hope you Enjoy A-School.

Wouldn't it be great to have some pictures of BEQ-129 for nostalgia.

I went to NSHS San Diego and the A-School students lived in open squad bays (formerly open wards) of the old hospital building. Maybe I'll see if I can find a photo.

It was "tradition" for the graduating class to burn popcorn in as many mircowaves as possible on their last night so all the smoke alarms would go off and the entire building would be evacuated at O-dark-thirty in the morning.

New students would always complain of the early morning cold and lost sleep but the closer you got to graduation, the more of a party the evacuations would become. However it was sometimes a fairly high stakes game of cat & mouse because you risked expulsion if you got caught doing it....

The conditions at NHCS have not changed much in 20years since I was there and My son who is there now. He has his cell phone which doesnt work well in the barracks. He has his laptop which doesn't have real good Internet access. Usually 3 to a room. The bowling alley is close by but the Rathskellar( hospital side bar) appears to be gone. Hey can anyone tell me why my son who graduated last week hasn't got ordrers yet???

In the 60's at Great Lakes, it was open bay. Also that was before cell phones and laptops were invented.

1991: mobile telephones and cell phones were invented but none of the students owned one. Carrying pagers was banned while in uniform. It was bad enough if a pager was in your possession, but as a student God help you if you wore one on your uniform. Laptops didn't really exist and desktop computers cost more than many cars. There was a computer network (LAN/WAN) at NSHS SD, but nothing like the WWW we know today and students had to have special permission to get near it.

However, beer & wine at 18 and spirits at 21 with a full bar in the lower level of the barracks...

Tim,

It is not unusual for your son to graudate and wait two weeks for orders....in most cases (back when I served) one and even several classes waited for a few more then they joined hand and went to FMF training.....in one case my class went to 29 Stumps for two weeks, only to join two other classes for FMF....Camp P was the junk back in 1988 and much better than Camp Swampy...we got to travel to T.J. and drink (back when the % Beer was for 18 y.o.-it no longer exist) and Liquor was for 21 and up....and I agree 8404.....I too would like to see some old Pic's of BEQ-129 and even BEQ-131....

Awe the times of going to the Basement of 131 to swim....that was the only place a male could go in that BEQ......if they only knew where I got those dry towels....and people wondered why there were "water trails" leading up the stairs and into the hall ways of the 'BIRTHING' (haha) rooms....aw the days....this site makes me remember the good times.....no wonder I miss some of my youth!

In 1966, Corps School Barracks at Great Lakes, consisted of open sleeping area with bunks on both sides....There was an open space with a coach and a TV to watch that new song and comedy show, THE MONKIES!.....

All food was at the GL Hospital and you could freeze going to and from Chow, saluting all the male and female officers along the way.

Good news, weekend leave was usually available and we had great snowball fights with the Waves in our Class.......I received a commemorative academic coin as the third highest Academic Score for our Corp School Company....the 1st and 2nd places of course went to Waves.....go figure.

Ah, good 'ole 129. Graduated 20NOV08. We called 129 the crackhouse, and 128 rehab since it was the same thing as 129 only smaller lol. 131 and 132 was the ritz and hilton. In all honesty, it's what you make of it. Of course 129 was horrid, but as long as you keep your chin up and stay moto you'll be fine.

What barracks is this at? Looks too nice for the crack house or rehab. Gawd those names make me laugh. Yes, we can see the pictures.

Are those wrinkles in the blanket(s)? It doesn't look like a quarter would bounce off of it! tsk tsk tsk....:D

If I can find my barracks pictures, I post one. Your pictures look like a good motel room picture compared to what we had.

I'm in BEQ 131 right now. I have two roomates, and two headmates. And wow the crackhouse (129) is in a lot worse shape than my place. Room inspections also depend on who is inspecting it. If you're not there yet hope that you get put into 131 or 132. I personally wouldn't want into 132 because there is more to clean.

I hate to ask, but what is a headmate? Someone you share the head with? or is it that you actually have 4 to the room?

It means that in 132 only 3 folks share 1 bathroom, where as in 129 it the bathrooms are shared by "MANY"...

ahh yes, the days of 129. My class had the whole wing to ourselves...course it didn't help they were 'renovating' around us. I know it was the right side of the building, I want to say third deck, but it's been a while...but it was our space and we were damn proud of it.
