My son has started his 2nd week in California in the surgical tech C school. Almost daily, we receive emails about how he hates the school. It is boring etc etc etc.. As a Navy mom, I tell him to stick it out. I know that when he leaves the Navy he wants to be a RN or a PA. And sometimes he says things like he might want to be an Officer , but not in the HM field. He sounds immature, I know this.. Any ideas comments on his options and what might happen if he chose anything other than to finish the C class? ( His grades are passing , as of now):chat:
Mrs. Jones,
This is not unusual for an ADVANCED student....I mean if he is bored, he is learning something he already knew and/or it is not challenging......BUT, it does get better.
Sometimes, if he just finished Bootcamp and A-school, another time away for schooling, while buddies are either out at sea, in another port (overseas), etc. and having fun, he is stuck on land in a building and most likely restricted to what he can and can not do....so he is bored....it is ok for this, but assure him that upon completion of his schooling, he will most likely one or more pay grades above his "Buddies" and IF he is a E-4 and goes ship board or FMF and goes on Deployment, he will most likely get "SEA PAY" while his E-1/E-2 or E-3 buddies just get paid....
So the Bene's out weigh the boredome, he just needs to stay focused on what he wants to do, LONG TERM GOALS are what he should think about....
Let him know that a great stepping stone to being an RN is surg tech. Those guys get to do a lot of great training and assist in a lot of surgeries and work side by side with the general surgeon, nurses and get great hands on training.
If I had not gone search and rescue, I would have gone surg tech, its a great job that gives you a lot of skills to advance up in the civilian surgical world.

Mrs. Jones,
I feel for your son....Surgical tech school is really borning. I can't say that I have gone through the school but when I was stationed at a naval hospital I worked in the operating room with no surgical skills. Mostly I cleaned and sterilized the surgical instruments which was so borning. On occasion I assisted with surgeries which was great, and I learned alot from the surgeries. During 1 surgery, the doctor asked for a hand and i looked at him and said excuse me and he said give me your hand, and well my hand ended up in the patients abdomen holding organs for the doctor. It was fun. But as for your son's C-school, i would just tell your son to stick it out. He will get good training and learn alot. He may not like the school but once he starts doing his job he will start to enjoy it and the more proficent he gets the happier he will be. Now if your son wants to be a PA or an RN the navy offers some great officer programs. Theres one for nursing and its called MCEP, its a great program and your son should check it out. Well i hope I helped with my words of encouragement.
