Greetings,
My problem is this: The move of N.S.H.S east and west coast, to Fort Sam Houston, has me stuck in limbo. My primary choice in "C" school is 8452 and have been hoping to walk down that path since I joined the Navy. I talked with the detailer a few weeks ago, and he was as they usually are, shallow with choices and stern in suggestions. Let me give a little of my background and then I'll get back into the issue...
I'm a 0000 and 0137(Surface SAR swimmer) HM3(SW) stationed aboard the USS Mobile Bay. I've been aboard nearly 3 years and have made a significant impact at my command. I've been BJ and JS of the quarter several times and BJ of the strike group once (Currently in the mix for JSOTSG). I've been on one deployment to the persian Gulf and recieved a NAM for my command acheivements. The point of me bringing this up is not to brag in any form (My achievements are minor in comparison to some of our brothers and sisters with boots on ground), but to show that I am indeed a Corpsman that has pride and is eager to compete and maintain my competiveness.
...that being said, the detailer basically said there's no way I'd be able to go Radiological Technician for several reasons. One, they aren't needed and are overmanned with no SRB. Two it's extremely competitive and the Navy just isn't trying to make many more. Three, I should be HM2 before I should even consider trying. I am not trying to down the detailer, but some of the thing I was told seems blatantly incorrect. One thing that did make sense to me was this: The last class in San Diego (Where I am stationed) is March 11th, 2009. The next class date is unknown, but is projected sometime late 2010 or possibly early 2011. One last thing about my conversation with the detailer. I mentioned that I had spoken with the 8452 School director here in San Diego, and he told me that seats may open for the March 11th class... I asked the detailer how I could go about getting the vacant seat, and he said "you don't."
So this is my issue. I am nearly clueless on how to go about finding all the information I need, and it seems nearly anyone I ask is as well. My EOAS is this year, 18SEP09, so I do not have a lot of time to try and get a zone A (not as important to me as getting the school I want) NEC. I plan on extending as long as necessary for me to get 8452, but this dream seems daunting. My package has already been put together for over 1 year now but not submitted.
Does anyone have a source of information or have a contact that knows when schools are opening up in Ft Sam Houston? I'd like to try to be one of the first HM's to attend class, if my package doesn't make it to this March 11th class.
Thanks,
HM3(SW) Vogel
