Can anyone answer a few questions for me? I am a new Navy wife and my husband is in "A: school as we speak. What do I have to look foward to as far as orders? I have already prepared myself that I won't see much of him the next year, so I go to Great Lakes as much as his liberty allows. After school if he gets stationed over seas (non-war zone) will I be able to go? This was a joint decision for him to join and I will support him NO MATTER WHAT! But at the same time I liked to have some idea what I'm going to be going thru. Please Help!:panda:

I'll assume your husband enlisted as Active Duty. As far as orders go, it's anybodies guess. We do know, it's always up to the Needs of the Navy.

He could be sent to Field Medical Training Battalion or referred to as FMTB. There are two locations in the U.S. but the curriculum is the same.

FMTB East Camp Lejeune, North Carolina (http://www.lejeune.usmc.mil/fmtb/index.shtml)
FMTB West Camp Pendleton, California (http://www.cpp.usmc.mil/schools/fmtb/index.asp)

The FMTB East website has a lot more information and the photo gallery, Strategic Plan, and the Student Handbook helps give you a good feel for what the school is like.

There are are overseas duty stations that are considered 'accompanied' tours of duty. Such as Italy (see the post about another wife who went with her husband there at http://www.corpsman.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35055&highlight=italy&page=2 post is dated 09-22-2008, 19:36).

Should your husband do very well academically, he 'may' be offered a 'C' school after Corpsman 'A' school. Nothing is guaranteed and only if there are 'C' school openings. Attending a specialty 'C' school will not keep him from possibly having to attend FMTB. With the U.S. currently at war, it is always a distinct possibility that most Corpsman will, at some point in their career, attend FMTB.

Naval Hospital Corps School - Great Lakes, IL (http://www.med.navy.mil/sites/navmedmpte/nhcs-gl/Pages/WelcomeAboard.aspx) is 70 training days in length, excluding weekends and holiday.

List of NEC Speciality schools (http://www.npc.navy.mil/Enlisted/MedicalDental/NEC+Information.htm) (note: Not all of these schools are offered after Corpsman 'A' school. Some require the Sailor complete a first tour of duty).

Welcome aboard and "Welcome to the Navy".

Tours of duty can be fun and exciting for both.....especially the returns from sea, just seeing all the sailors standing on the side boards all dressed up excited my family!

Like 8404 stated...."The Needs Of the Navy come first".

Be patient and don't forget the Navy Motto "Hurry Up and Wait".

Welcome NavyWife,

As others have already pointed out, it's best to be flexible when it comes to orders, but once an ultimate duty station (where your husband will be for his first tour) is identified, and you arrive, feel free to get involved with the command ombudsman and their program as it's a great resource for spouses. I'm married to another active duty HM, and while I understand a lot of Navy life from my own perspective, the ombudsman for her command kept me informed about what was going on during deployments, etc.

If your husband is enlisted under a National Call to Service, or Reserve program, the process is a little different, and I'd be more than happy to help with those as well.

Don't forget that many bases have great things to do, MWR is at all the bases, and it will make your time well spent. I recommend to utilize the base A LOT. ie: base theater, bowling, Commissary, etc. They are easier to access and provide for you much better than Wally-World!

When my son comes into town we hit the Base Privies hard.....not to mention they save $$$ and with this economy, and being military pay being....well you know, but it is a sorce of income you can count on and you do have that JOB SECURITY!!!! So enjoy!
