View Full Version : Acronyms
Where can I find a complete list of acronyms? I have done a search on the site and nothing is coming up.

Acronyms for what? Medical, military, or what?
I don't think there is a complete list of either on this site. I don't think the internet is big enough.
Starting on page 26 of the DEP-PQS (http://www.corpsman.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/depsuccessaccelerator.pdf) book, there is a short list of Navy terminology.
Here is an acronym list (http://www.2-sir.com/TwinFalls/acronym6.html) I just found.
Kentucky,I am just looking for a general navy terminology list. Things like PSI, PFT,BUDs and the like. I found a list online but it was too formal. Just like something for everyday jargon. Thanks 8404 for the list you found and I have my son's DEP book but that isn't what I was looking for.
slg,
I couldn't tell from your last post if you found everything you were looking for or not, so here's another list of lists for you: http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/acronymsabbreviations/Acronyms_Abbreviations_Deciphering_the_Alphabet_So up.htm
Hope that helps.
Indy:
Both of our sites give a funny definition for PSI and it's certainly not a Navy meaning.
Yeah, thats what I find too...lol! So for the laymen when you look at those acronyms how can you be sure you are getting what you really want? I mean really, how can I show my sailor how brilliant I am when I think he is walking around with his PSI hanging out ;)
ok, maybe I'm just having a special day, but after reading through both links, I don't get it...PSI - pounds per square inch, no? perhaps I'm looking at the wrong thing.:err:
Help?

PSI: Pre School Indoctrination.
Good luck!
PSI: Pre School Indoctrination.
Because I thought you were joking with me ... Pre-School?

No in other words they are waiting for a SCHOOL... so it is "PRE-SCHOOL INDOC" in other words you work at a command until your school opens up there go "PRE"..
Latin my friend..
:-)
Como? Latin??
ho kay, esta muy claro mi jefe!

It's just that the 'indoc' part doesn't always line up with the type of schooling one is waiting for. For example, PSI duty, while waiting for FMTB. PSI duty in Podiatry at the hospital. Jess Sayin! How would that be an indoc to FMTB?

Chief's don't win; they just modify the rules so the outcome is always in their favor... :D
<starts ducking for cover...>
Thanks guys!! Now I must start a list so I will be "in the know" when I talk to my son. Now I will have to figure out how to keep them at the ready for when we talk to each other ;)!
Use them often enough, and they'll become like bad habits you can't get rid of! :D I know from my experiences talking to my mom about life in the Navy, she had a hard time with a lot of the acronyms and never really got comfortable with them so it made for some confusion about where I was and what the heck I was actually doing.
Pretty soon, you'll feel like you're speaking a whole new language!
Shoot...I just want to know what the heck he is saying to me! And just make sure he isn't slipping something in on me that I need to know...LOL
I hear ya, you'll pick 'em up pretty quick though - we use a lot of the same ones all the time.
... we use a lot of the same ones all the time.
Yeah, like the title thing we discussed earlier... :D
Hey now...I said "a lot", not "all"!!!!
slg,
Here's another link that may include some 'unofficial' ancronyms or references for you: http://www.hazegray.org/faq/slang1.htm and http://www.hazegray.org/faq/slang2.htm
glad they helped...came from http://bluejacket.com/ which has a bunch of good information and history about the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard if you are interested.
I really appreciate all the help. Y'all are great!
