I will have to defer to someone else exactly how and when you find out 'which' unit you will be assigned to. I was under the impression you had the unit assignment on your orders prior to leaving GLakes. It may be left up to the staff at FMTB, who may work in conjunction with the Camp Pendleton receiving folks, as to which unit of 1st MarDiv you'll be assigned to.
Keep in mind, there are some 1st MarDiv units based out of 29 Palms for which you could be assigned to.

Shipmate.. You won't know until you report into S-1, If your ordered to the "BASE" or to 1st MARDIV.. you will be parted out to who needs you..
Good Luck, You serve honorably with "ALL" Marine Corps Units..

Chief,
Who makes the detailing/billet decisions when it comes to graduating from FMTB? is the Navy HM detailer that give a generic division (1st MarDiv etc) and then division staff put you into a billet where needed, or is there a different process?

usually it says 1st MARDIV etc.. then your detailed from there.. this is USN side of the house in our house.. I knew exactly where I was going..

Rog, just wondered if it was any different being integrated with Marines.
So, this person would report into S-1 at Camp Pendleton 1st MarDiv and they would make the determination to one of their units at either Camp Pendleton or 29 Palms correct?

No if you had 29 Palms it would say so outright..
His probably say 1stMARDIV Camp P..
or it would say 1stMARDIV 29Palms

That was my understanding, just validating. Then things haven't changed much from the 70's as orders gave you the 'where'. Specific unit assigning was handled upon reporting in to that base!

Thanks 8404, I think I figured it all out too now, just had to change my frame of reference: basically its the same as when a NAT/NCS reports to the NOSC. The orders say NOSC, but then we put them in a specific unit based on needs and their rate/skills etc.
