I leave for boot camp in June so im just trying to get some info. I already have info on a school but i was wondering how c school works? Can i go to c school right after a school? What types of c schools are there ? How long are some of the c schools? Just general info is what im looking for cause my recruiter is not a corpsman and does not kno a whole lot about the rate. Tanks
There are likely to be opportunities for you to be offered some C schools directly from A school, but those depend on openings and availability so don't expect it. For reference for C schools in general, there is a complete listing posted here: http://www.npc.navy.mil/Enlisted/MedicalDental/NEC+Information.htm and that contains information about length and subject matter.

Once you attend a "C" school, does that become your new job, i.e. Radiology, and then you only perform radiology functions in your current assignment and future, or is it just a career builder to give you further options down the road? Basically, once you attend a C school, can you be deployed out or reassigned later to your previous job?

It becomes your current job. However, if you attend FMTB you hold the NEC of 8404. In your example you use Radiology of which I can speak to. My son is an HM-8404 and also holds the NEC of 8452 Radiology Technologist. While working at a hospital shooting x-rays, he does have the opportunity to earn additional Radiology modalities such as Sonography etc..
What most people don't share, is that while enjoying the comfortable hospital, your name goes on a platform (list) of qualified (8404) Corpsman who are deployment eligible. So, if there is a unit (Marine or otherwise) who are short a Corpsman, they can and do pull from that list and you augment that unit as an Individual Augmentee or IA. So, if you're thinking that by going to a C school will preclude you from deployments to Afghanistan or Iraq, it will not.

8404,
Thanks for the reply and information. I am an Army Doc so the NEC Codes are foreign to me. The Army operates the same way. If I am a medic, and reclass to another medical job, I can and always will be available for medic positions if needed. I have several buddies who were medics and lab techs and they soon found themselves back in line units. Again, thanks for the info. I'm coming back in and trying to get as much info as possible before doing so.
Doc:
NEC 8452 = Radiology Technologist
NEC 8404 = Field Medical Service Technician
Cool on the Army, I am former Army as well as former Marine. Imagine the change in the lingo.
Being prior service Marine, I wasn't required to attend Army basic. I thought that was cool, but didn't know the language. How the heck was I supposed to know what TA-50 was and they were referring to my 782?
We wish you the very best!
8404,
Does that qualify as speaking a foreign language? :D

8404,
Wow, three switches. Let me ask, did you finally find a good fit on the navy side of things? A good friend of mine from high school is now an E-7 diver and loves it. Works with Army on some projects and kinda watches them like he found a new species or something. Indy, as for it being a foreign language, I just found that when in the line units, grunts and headsakes worked really well sometimes. 8404, can I pm you sometime about some certain questions when they arise?
Doc_R,
I only speak Navy, and think that works just fine within our service... :)
No problem Doc Roberts;
Although I was never in the Navy, only Marines and Army. My son is a Navy Corpsman, thus my involvement here. I, like you, was looking for answers and found them here. I learned and decided to stay and become a passer of knowledge.
Indy: I know what you are thinking ha ha ha
I think you will love being an HM. If you become an x-ray tech you will be comfy, as just an 8404 you wont get a bonus like you probably would in the Army or promote the way you would in the army. I know after 6 months in the army you are promotable regardless of rank. in the Navy it is a 2 year wait from e4 to e5 and 3 years from e5 to e6..but do have the option of being blue side if you're im tired of being greenside or even have the option of deploying with the Army. Plenty of GSA/ECRC billets(Army deployment billets) if you get nostolgic, which all of the male HM's I deployed with out of FT. Riley went into small 4-12 man infantry teams which I enjoyed. Also once you make E5 you can become an independant duty corpsman which is like a PA or Army 18D without having to do the years of school or having to be in spec ops. There is a lot you can do.
MexDoc,
-The time in rate for promotion eligibility from E4 to E5 in the Navy is 12 months, not 24.
-To apply for IDC as an E-5, you must have six years of service, with four in rate. E-5 must also have two years time in grade as E-5. The school itself is 1 year long.
