View Full Version : Wait for fmf?
Hi, future reserve fmf corpsman here. At Meps I got the job I had been hoping for as a fmf corpsman( being an emt and firefighter student helped I guess) but I don't ship out until the new fiscal year in Oct. My question was if it is on my contract as fmf does that mean they must give me a chance to go to the school. I don't want to go in thinking I wont be stuck behind a desk. Thats why I am a civilian medic, I hate being locked to a desk.
And if I do meet the physical standards as a female how long will it take to get "c" school for fmf after "a" school? I know they only take a few females for fmss training. What would help increase my chances besides good pt times, and an emt cert.?
Thank you so much for the guidance I don't have a great reqruiter.

Egads your right, didn't see it.. I apologize..
:not:
That being said.. You cannot go to a "C" school until your finished with your initial Pipeline of training..
Boot--->
10-11Weeks
"A" School--->
Up to 14 weeks
FMSS--->
School itself if 7 weeks, but you have to wait for your class to start. Here is where you could be on hold for a while for it to start. You will "NOT" be going home until after your done with FMSS. All Females go to FMSS @ Camp Lejeune, NC. Your hold time will be at Camp Lejeune either at the hospital or at a BAS.
Report to Reserve unit....
The Day you grad FMSS your sent back home. You have "3" working days to report to your Reserve Ctr to be affiliated with your Reserve Unit.
@ your Reserve Center is where they will process your 20K bonus. You "DO NOT" get it until you have completed all training.
After you have been affiliated.. that is when you can try to procure a C-School Seat from the Reserves. I can tell you it is "BILLET" driven. There has to be a billet available and needed to be filled for you to go to that school.
Well that is about that.. I hope it helps..

Chief, I know it is different for reservists, but for us active people at least, when we graduated corps school, we were given 5 days of leave. Then we reported to Pendleton for FMSS. I reported to boot camp on Oct. 2nd and graduated the 1st of Dec. to help you with a timeline. Then I got to A school, got 11 days for x-mas leave, came back to corps school and its up to you from there. At least that's how it worked for me, I know they are getting a new CO so maybe things will change timeline wise. Question for you chief, in my orders I graduate FMSS on the 28th of June. I have to report to Okinawa on July 2nd. I will have 11 days of leave on the books. Can I extend my days of leave past the 2nd of June? Do I just call Okinawa or what's the process. Thanks

KentukyBoy,
Once orders are written they give you a Report No-Later than date and if you aren't there by that date then you face being UA. The answer to your question. You would have to ask the detailers for an order modification to get your leave extended beyond the 2nd of July. Though when going overseas this is sometimes hard because they need people there by certain dates so others also transfer. Though it still doesn't hurt to ask the detailers because the worse thing they can say is NO!

Thanks for posting. I shipout in Sep 26. I reckon after processing week I'll start up early October. My timeline will be just like yours.
The only variables will be down time between A school and FMSS.
Question. Being an active duty male and from southwestern VA, will I be in North. C. for my FMSS?

You will be in the place that has a "SEAT" for you the quickest. You could end up in CA or NC. It also depends on your duty station, (Not always but mostly) if you are stationed on the "LEFTIST" coast, you will probably get CA for FMSS, and Vice a Versa for the "Right" Coast..
;-)
But if a seat is availible and your availible, thats where your going..
In other words.. 'WHO THE HELL KNOWS?" :nah:

Aye Chief.
Travel and Adventure was the third reason for joining the Navy, so no proplem.
I know the Navy is covering the cost for the trip to Great Lakes; however, after that I must provide the means to travel.
I plan on deep sixing my auto while on leave after A school.
I would like to sell it before shipping out, but who knows, I may not make it through boot camp or A school.
What do you recommend Chief?
Keep in mind I am 6 years active duty and wish to be FMF.

A word of advice..
Is your car paid for? If not and your still making payments, your debt to income ratio can severly limit you on orders. My advice.. Ditch it as soon as possible. This is for "OVERSEAS" orders, I.e Japan, Spain, Germany, etc.. etc.. etc..
HOpe this helps..
Also another thing, when the Navy sends you to a new duty station etc.. They Pay for it. You only pay for your leave and liberty.
Good Luck!

Well ...
If it is paid for, I would keep it for a bit, keep insurance on it, after you are done with Corps School, you can have your car at FMSS, I would "HIGHLY" recommend a Car at either place. "Long walk".. You can get a feel for what you want to do after you get your orders at NHCS.

having a car at FMSS will definitely make it more comfortable as on base transportation leaves a lot to be desired.

Keep to Car!
I am currently at FMSS Camp Pendleton and trust me, you will want/need it. Pendleton has good transportation, but its still much easier if you have your own mode of transport.
