Hey guys, first off I'd like to say that you have a great site and I have learned a lot just from browsing it.
I am 18 and earned my EMT-Basic license in the state of New Mexico last summer (2008), that same summer I started my EMT-Intermediate classes but had to drop them because of interference with my work schedule. I plan to take those courses again this summer. However, I did learn how to give IV's and the basics of intermediate medicine (morphine, advanced epinephrine, ect.) before I dropped.

My questions to you are: With my knowledge gained so far, how well would I be prepared for corpsman training, specifically FMF? And does anyone know how the drug dosages for EMT national registry compare with that of the Navy's? (In other words, would I have to memorize a new set of dosages for the Navy?)

Thanks - T. Veitch

Well Im an old school Corpsman but from what I remember the hardest transition from civilian emergency medicine to military emergency medicine is in triage. This may not be of much help to you but I thought Id throw in my 2 cents worth.

Emergency medicine is pretty much universal, but your scope of practice will be different depending on where you end up. As EchoDco noted, triage is vastly different compared to the civilian community - and you may have to become familiar with some new meds given to treat CBR issues, but the basics are the same.

So long as you approach it with an open mind, and realize that there *are* differences, you'll do fine.

Just don't try to 'civilianize' Navy medicine, lol, you'll just frustrate yourself. :D

No that does help. I hadn't though about triage, but it makes sense that it would be different. Thanks guys!
