we are off to Great Lakes Naval Health Clinic...which I believe is a fancy name for hospital LOL! I know DH isn't over the moon about these orders but it will help him finish off his degree and get to doing what he really wants to do!

I'm excited, nervous, happy, anxious, scared, elated....ack! And, of course I am doing the PCS preparation on my own and I'm 1/2 a world away from our current duty station!!! Gotta love the Navy :)

Congrats on the orders...there are actually several clinics at Great Lakes; there is the hospital itself, the clinic in Bldg 237, and then the clinic at RTC which falls under the NTC medical if I remember, so he may be at any one of those.

Let us know if you need help with any of the transition.

He's a IDC correct? (Yeah I know but I'm old..)

I can tell you because I know quite a few IDC's who work at the clinic's. Indy is correct in that he will be all over the place working. RTC, NAVSTA etc..

He will stand IDC Duties for RTC so he will be doing some weekends etc..

I don't believe it is overnight duty but I could be wrong.

He can expect 1 or 2 IA rotations while stationed here.. I hate to tell you that but it is true, IDC's get pulled a lot from Great Lakes.

There is plenty and I mean Plenty of housing here. Good Exchange, Good Commissary, etc..

Now the bad.. Not sure if you have kids.. The Schools are "ATROCIOUS" in and around the base. I actually bought a house in Zion when I moved here and my daughter did 1 year in public schools and now I have all 3 in a Catholic school up here in Zion.

This is a Buyers Market up here for houses right now, not sure if your into that etc, but you can pretty much if your credit is good, get yourself into a place if you use his VA Loan.

Any more questions, send me some..

Good Luck!

thanks for the info. Hopefully we'll get a good year in before he gets pulled for any other missions; he's got one tour in Iraq with Fleet Hospital, one IA with the Army and now the 'Stan with the Marine Corps...I sure would like someone else to go over there and give him a break :)

I have heard the schools are AWFUL which I am NOT looking forward to. I've been poking around different websites with school ratings and different housing options. I think I'll end up taking a road trip to check things out (I'm in Indiana right now). The goal is to get in and out of there FAST and head to San Antonio for PA school; we'll see what the Navy has in store for us.

Can you recommend any non-religious affiliated private schools in the area?

Clinics do not have 24 hour care facilities such as wards. the GLNHC is just a clinic. Grats on your orders!

Thanks HN, I'm familiar with the difference between a clinic and a hospital. I was told by his HMCS that the orders are all encompassing and he could be put anywhere at anytime (as Da-Chief and Indy said).

Nope not "non-religious".. They are the only private ones.. Sorry, and honestly they are about 2000% better then the regular schools..

Now I am speaking for North Chicago, Zion, and Waukegan (Crackegan).

If you look out towards Greyslake, and Gurney they have much better schools, also look at Antioch.

Those are the areas I would recommend.

Good luck!

p.s Be kind to Taylor he was just trying to help out. It used to be a hospital up here and quite a few folks still think it is.

Just a suggestion.Have you looked into a Montessori school in the area.If youre only expecting to be there a short while its not a bad option.Unless theyve changed,I worked with a few when I worked for the YMCA.There non religious.Just a thought.

They downgraded the hospital up the street from the school house? Is that what you are referring too? If so, then I made a mistake as well thinking it was still a hospital.
