I just got word that we lost a 1rstLt over in Iraq. His father use to be attached to MAG-49 here in Willow Grove, PA. The 1rstLt was very close friends with a few of my pilots.
The word that I got today is that "they" his unit was attacked by a snyper. The snyper went after the Corpsman first. After he was hit, the Marines jumped up to protect him. The snyper took out the 1rstLt and another Marine. The Corpsman and the one Marine are alive, but the 1rstLt didn't make it.
That's pretty much all that I know at this point, but I thought that I would pass this along. It just goes to show, what we "DOCs" mean to our Marines.

How sad...God bless them both for their bravery.
So what is going on over there? Are they targeting Corpsmans?

Jane,
Hate to say it but yes.. They are.. happened in Vietnam as well.. If they can take out those who take care of the rest...
I hate to say it but we are the "ONLY" ones who follow the Geneva Convention these days..

Unfortunately this is not an uncommon practice for the "enemy" to target the corpsman or medic - it goes all the way back to WWI
Just one more reason for Corpsman and Medics to teach those whose lives they may save to be able to save a life themselves.
Needless to say it scares the hell out of me that the very people who are there to save lives are primary targets.
Yeah we are adhering to the Geneva Convention - but this isn't a "war" anymore - these people aren't following any "rules of engagement" .... It's time to do what needs to be done to get our people out of there and back home.
Sorry, mom rant
gijane - our boys are doing what they want to do and they are being trained to take care of their Marines - their Marines will take care of them too.
Bright Blessings to you

DeeDee,
We are teaching our Marines how to save lives themselves. There is a program, called Combat Life Savers. We just started one here for our Aircrew and are hoping to be able to work it into the ground crews too. I know that the idea is to train the Marines to be able to save lives to help the "Docs". The Army has the same program.
Just thought I would let you know that we are in the process of teaching those that we save to help save others.

I have always thought it was a great idea for the Marines know how to save lives too - especially since the Corpsman can't be EVERYWHERE at the same time.
Thanks for sharing that info

DeeDee,
We have been training our Marines in the Lejeune area since 04. Though the number of personnel trained was based on what the unit was doing. Though with the updated Individual First Aid Kits they get trained on how to utilize it. It's a good bit better than the old First Aid Kits.
I'm sure eventually most Marines will be able to attend this class and we'll get more trained. Problem is that the Med Bags available for these personnel have been limited which is why they fielded the training the way they did.
Thanks for the info Cajun
