Hi, I would like to know why field corpsman are not given some hands on training time in a hospital or clinic setting before they put them out in the field. I know they are well trained because my son stated that a lot of his teachers were corpsman that had just returned from Iraq. Is it that we are such a need for corpsman that we are moving them thru so fast? I know I sound very worried, I watched my dad go to Vietnam as a field corpsman and I also was a corpsman, so I know the routine. This is different being that it is my son. Thanks Lynn

Hi, I think because the tools of the trade have changed to meet the new modern requirements in the field for fast, efficient efforts to conserve body fluids, establish patent airways, and stabilize skeletal function. EMS has progressed so far that it makes us old guys look like we took a first aid class at sears. These new kids are so sharp and fast that they have a definite positive contribution to keeping casulties alive and well. So dont worry, they are getting what they need to save lives on the battle field. I only wish I had had some of the training and tools the New Corpsman have in the field. God Bless them all. And as you know, these Corpsman are NONCOMBATANTS who go to war not to kill but to save lives and ease pain. Semper Fi, Olddoc1

Lynn,

As I am on the staff at NHCS (Naval Hospital Corps School) and am myself a instructor, I can assure you that your son is getting the same if not better training then I recieved in 1985. Yes they are putting more emphasis on Battelfield medicine, but that is becuase the quad "0" HM's are pretty much a thing of the past. We are all "WARRIORS" now in Navy Medicine. If you cannot function in the battlefield, then you are senthome. It is a sign of the times.

Most hospital positions on wards etc, even for nurses now are Civ's.. The day of the Ward Hm's are pretty much done.. All shore duty HM's are on Platforms for mobilization and can probably be assured a overseas deployment on shore duty at least once or twice.

I can assure you though that your son's training is top notch. Yes it is computer based, but they all still have to pass the labs with instructors and then have to pass 13 tests with a 70% or better.

Problem is, they are all kids and think it is a party. We try to let them know what is on the other side, just tell him to listen.

If he has any questions, tell him to come and see me in Student Control, most of the students know who I am.

;-)
Thanks

HMC Crone

Lynn,

The fast track training today is different than it was when we were young HMs. Typically, we all had to go to the wards. Like it was said, those days are gone.

Civilians (my gosh how they would drive me nuts) handle most of the in patient and administrative issues. am HM today can expect A school then either a ship, or FMF assignment. The fast track doesn't waste time, doesn't give them useless information (like drip factoring, which btw I NEVER used) .

What it gives them is intense specialized training to go out and make a difference in the mission today. Your son got the best from the best, he got it right from guys with experience.

The guy saying our training looks like we got it a first aid course ala SEARS was dead on. I laughed but its so true. However, the basics still remain, we just perfected how we take care of them.

Chief Crone email me, I have asuggestion to stop that "party" mentality.

Also, can an old worn out broken (somedays use a cane) 44 yr old fleet reservist come talk to the kiddies some day? I would love to!!!! Maybe next June for the Birth Day?

I TFR'd last June

HMCS Shadden make it there yet?
