Hi all - Can someone tell me what are good things to volunteer for, what are not, and why? A Sailor told me that volunteering for Laundy duty is a good one if you can get it. Yet I've been told not to ask for anything, just fly under the radar so to speak.

I think that regardless of whether you 'volunteer' or get 'voluntold,' it's what you do with the program or job that determines its worth. If you make the best out of any situation, you'll do fine.
Do you mean at boot camp or actually at a command?

Thank you all. Poolzer: Yes, I was asking in regard to at basic, but I'll take advisement on the command as well.

When in boot camp, I had been set back two weeks until a special units company could be formed. They came and got us one day and said either paint/clean or trash duty. Silly me, I volunteered for trash duty.
We picked up cigarette butts around the PX for about two hours, then they told us we could make any phone calls we wanted. Nice to get a benefit phone call off to the family.
Other than that, I can't remember what I did for the rest of the two weeks, as time just flew by.
But again, I'm reminded of the acronym N/A/V/Y (as previously mentioned).

The Sailor that told you that volunteering for laundry duty was fun, pulled what I call the "Blue Falcon" on you, as he chuckled when you got out of site. On the other hand, when your in Boot Camp volunteer for everything. The reality is, its not the real world or the Fleet, so it's not going to kill you.

Hmm, well the one job that NOBODY wants is Head PO. It is amazing at how disgusting that head got. If I went through again I would either want to be the Yeoman or the Laundry PO. Laundry PO always seemed to be conveniently busy in the laundry room every time we got IT'ed haha. & the Yeoman always new the inside scoop of what was going on because he has the schedule and listens to what the RDCs are talking about inside the office.
Yup, I was the yeoman for my division, it was a great job to have with a lot of independence. Gained a lot of insight from being in that office (as well as issuing a lot of 'phone stamps' to recruits hard cards when the RDC were gone). Great perks and responsibilities came from that.
Man, I had a blast as Starboard Watch...best of all worlds I felt. You get to set the watchbill, plus 'arrange' and/or 'manage' your time on some of your own terms...

During service week I painted our "Company Rag" and then became the Guide for it. We were the honor company (RTC Orlando) Company 235 1979. Since I was the only one that was going to be a Corpsman, My C/C CPO Cersosimo, made me the
Dental PO. That was cake duty.
