Is it a long shot, or is there a decent chance I could get orders to a ship straight out of “A” school? (Considering I do well, and have a high class rank)
If I can't, would serving first somewhere else enhance my chances of being able to serve on a ship or attend a “C” school, if so, then where?

Two words - coming from a guy who did pull a ship straight from NHCS - slim & none. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. It is possible, but an exceedingly long shot.
It is more likely that you may have the option of going to a ship when you are up for your second set of orders, but again the vast majority of sea billets for the HM community are with the FMF so the odds are not in anyones favor. Doesn't mean it's not possible though.
