I recently chose orders to Ft Sam Houston, however, I will be graduating Hospital Corps school in October and will be heading to San Antonio in Dec after FMTB at Camp Pendleton.

My question is, What do the Corpsman do at Ft Sam?
I know my brother (an Army medic) went through Ft Sam back in 05.
But any info about what ill be doing would be greatly appreciated, Thx.

Are you attending a 'C' school at Ft. Sam Houston, or is this your pemanent duty station? Here are the links to:

You might be staff for the new navy "C" schools there. I'm sure where theres a school there will probably be a navy run clinic also...maybe. I'm currently at the schoolhouse in san diego but there doesnt seem to be much movement...there are flyers on the walls showing san antonio tourism stuff.. i wouldn't really know since I belonge to a different command though. since you are getting stationed in the area you should try putting a packing in for a C-school, i recommend X-ray since there is chances for using that out in the civilian side and if choose to make the Navy a career you can also come to IDC school and continue through the ranks. 60% of the HM's that picked up Chief last cycle (not this one) were IDC's of some sort and about 80 percent of the type commander's for HM's were also IDC's at some point..something to chew on :)

STEFFEY

what i can say about working w/ the army in an army hospital...be prepared to do a lot of admin...the army dont like us CORPSMEN even w/ the credintuals that i do have as a phelbometist and Medical Assistant, both given to me by the Navy, while i was on Camp Pendleton, here at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center all i am allowed to do is admin work...i just think that the army hates the fact that we Corpsmen are better trained coming out of corps school then they ever are and that we can work where ever we want/are assigned to...its even worse when your an 8404...dont get me wrong but i do miss the pt care and make up of a Naval hospital and my Marines...but i take it all w/ a grain of salt here because in lil over a year ill be back where i belong..w/ my Marines

HM3 Wison;

You make mention, you have Navy certifications as a Medical Assistant and as a Phlebotomist and the Army doesn't use you in your specialties. Have you been civilian certified by:

The National Phlebotomy Association (http://www.nationalphlebotomy.org/index.html) (CPT)
The American Registry of Medical Assistants (http://arma-cert.org/) ( R.M.A. for traditional medical assistants and the designation R.M.A.-A. for those who are administrative only.)

This may have something to do with your current situation. If you have a situation or a problem, offer a solution. Research on methods to improve your marketability as opposed to seeing only the negative aspect of things.

Your current command is what you make of it. If you wish to refer to yourself as a Tampon, then that is how you will be perceived by your command and colleagues.

Professionalism starts here, with you, in everything you do.
