View Full Version : Question about basic
hey guys I have a question about basic. I did four years of JROTC, etc. And my Mom and my Uncle, both who went to military basic (mom was discharged from Air Force basic due to knee problems, Uncle was discharged from Marines for other medical issues). They are telling me to keep my head down and not volunteer or stand out when they ask. The neighbor who did 6 years in the Marine Corps said that I should. I know thats it basically opinion, but what do the RTC's like to see and what will help set me up for getting orders that I want in the future to C school, etc?

Are you coming in as a E-3? If so then just kick ass at your school work, this is the only way you will get better orders or C-Schools. My advice to you is ditch the C-School until your done with your first tour, unless it is the SAR program thing..

As an E-3, there won't be too many advantages to being a leader in boot camp. It will help you develop your leadership skills in the military, but other than causing a lot of stress, I would stay low. If you really want to exceed in the military you should volunteer and stand out, but in boot camp there aren't too many advantages especially as an E-3.

I agrre, when you get to NHCS, ask to be a part of the color guard, if you get that, it's the best Collat duty there is there. But the biggest and best thing you can do to help yourself out for orders and such is to get a great GPA.. 90% or above. Remember all the collat duties are not going to make you a better HM. I would be a sponge and soak up all there is offered to learn. To often people bite off more then they can chew.
Don't be suprised though that the Div leaders see your record with JROTC and they make you a leader anyways..

I got out of boot in March and my mission was to keep my head low as well and it didn't work. If you're squared away...you're on the radar. It was pretty easy to pick out the good recruits from the shitbags on day one, so imagine how easy it is for a RDC who has pushed a few divisions!
The bottom line is that if you get asked to be a leader then take it and run with it. Your RDC's are just trying to put together the best division they can. They have stakes in your success as well.
Leading was fun to a certain extent. Just don't be the MAA because everyone hates that guy. ;)
The school house is pretty similar. If your test score are high, you will be asked to be a leader (red badge).
Be the best recruit/sailor you can be and take the rest in stride. It's a cake walk.

Hey man...I agree with those above...I just graduated on Friday and for a while was the RPOC and ended up head section leader and Honor Graduate...HOWEVER it is a LOT of work for nothing if you are already E3...think of this as your middle school transcript...there is NO GOOD reason that anyone will ever look at your boot camp records...if you do something horrific or borderline awful and they want to look up your history of behavior they will ASK for your boot camp Hard Card but otherwise it adds up to nothing...
I will tell you this on responsibility...being the section leader I ironed until 2am in the morning preparing my section for inspections...if you are perfect then you are all set...if you get any hits its ALL your fault...in the end? nothing you can do...out of 88 recruits there were about 25 completely squared away recruits carrying our entire division...your going to get noticed no problem
best of luck... :)
