Ok I am going to naval hospital 29 palms, but in my orders it says marine corps detachment...
Anywho I have a friend here in FMTB who is attached to 7th marines over there and he says they are going on a MEU deployment in december...
Is there a way for me to get on that detachment...providing they need 8404's and getting a fresh HN salty :)
thanks guys!!
also what exactly does that MAR DETACH at the end of my orders actually mean?
and how does a 8404 in a hospital go about getting deployed???

IDCWife is correct. They do deploy 8404s directly out of the hospital. Make sure you notify your Chain of Command of your interest.
However, some commands say you can't deploy until after being at the command for a few months. Each command is different.

You gotta wait 3 months AFTER checking into your comand boss, I been trying to get on a deployment from OCS and I keep getting told I gotta wait 3 months. Thank god November is going to be quick in getting here so I can GET out of dodge.

Each command is different, Portsmouth, VA is 6 months!
Definitely depends on the command - I've been at this one for 4 years, and I'm still trying to go...

well my HM2's and HM1's said it works like this...
If the deployment is badarse then they will try to give it to the ones who "deserve" it
But if you have 20 elgibible and 1 of those 20 have not been deployed they will send him
I guess there are a lot of factors that go with it...they say just try and make friend's in high places haha
I think that would be a great first deployment...maybe i'll turn 21 in australia pfft
My DIVO told us at a meeting that the "grace period" was shorten from 6 months to 3 months just recently for deploying after checking onto a command.
But I am with Indy, I have put in for every deployment opportunity for the last 2.5 years at this command. The closest I have ever gotten was "maybe we can slide you on the standby list, no promises."
Maybe 2nd Med Bat will be different.

Follow up with your COC and keep submitting request chits for IA status. Persistence pays off.

Believe that should be "If it wasn't written down, then it never happened," no?

Thank you for the correction on the quote.

I didn't know Tom Clancy used that?
Christ, I wish someone would have told my husband "maybe we'll try to slide you in!" 3 up and 3 down...no ifs, ands or buts about it.
'Tis what he wanted though and we reaped the reward in the end.

Tony,
He used that in reference to a question during an interview about his sources for specific information he obtained to be able to write certain books. I think it dealt with his second book and the first in the series using the character of John Ryan if I remeber correctly.
Hey bro the Battalions get their MAP (augmentes) corpsman usually around 3 months before deployment. so if they are leaving in december there is a good chance that they already have their MAPs. But go to the Manpower office and try to get put on but be careful cuz they may pull you for another deployment instead. Needs of the Navy and all..

my old command would only send sailors on MEUs if they'd been to the sandbox at least once.

How do they expect you to gain deployment experience with the command if they only send members if you have prior experience?

Only those who have deployed to the sand, would be offered or placed on MEU's. The rest, who've never deployed, were sent to the sand, thus gaining their deployment experience.
