Tv show TRAUMA
Did anyone catch this new show on NBC? If you didn’t, just try it. It set the bar high with its premier and the previews for next week look just as good.
The first lifesaving scene involved a Veteran just back from a tour. Luckily the victim's cellphone (not toasted after high voltage) was able to reveal the cousin on speed dial happened to know victim’s medical history - that was handy.
Then there was Multi-casualty incident in heavy traffic, on a bridge, with an 18-wheeler and a dripping fuel tank – course a spark followed shortly thereafter. The eight vehicles crashing was caused by a Texter/Should-be-Driver/Jerk that literally got a dose of shut the hell up.
There was the EMS team having an affair – in the back of the bus nonetheless. A suspicious spouse checked the cellphone of her husband after his late shift. The token “Para-god” tried to share an adrenaline rush experience only to be put in his place by the new pint-sized, bold, female “Do-gooder.” Para-god then goes home with his tail between his legs but not for long, as the “Barbie doll” EMS character (that thinks she might rather work in a hospital) shows up late in the night for a little platonic spooning.
So how realistic vs. how Hollywood? There were a few cheesy Hollywood moments and I thought it made Paramedics look rather quick to push drugs. Other than that, the cast meshed well and I found it darn entertaining – totally beating out that other new show, “MERCY.”
The preview really didn't look interesting, but maybe it's worth another look.
... platonic spooning.
Oh my ... spooning! ... Isn't that a piece of silverware used for breakfast cereal ... oh well, time for this old man to go to sleep.

To be honest, I wasn't that impressed with it - Not quite sure what they were going for, but it felt like they were trying to make an updated combination of Third Watch and ER all in one show. Perhaps it was just because it was the pilot but I didn't feel like it made for compelling viewing, enticing you to keep watching. Then again that may just be that I've been in the field and know what to expect.
I thought it had promise, but don't think it's going to make it onto my must watch list.
after seeing the previews, I was not interested at all. Seemed to me they were trying to push the paragod motif, and that all calls are intense high-adrenaline, everyone's about to die type of thing.
After years in the field I too kind of saw it as a joke. But Ill give it a watch and see how it actually turns out.
EDIT:
Well I went ahead and watched the show over at http://www.nbc.com/trauma/
Honestly it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was a little corny imho, but overall it was a little fun. I did find quite a few things silly, but then again Ive never worked on that side of the country, much less for that company. So things could be different than what Ive experienced elsewhere. It did seem most of the paramedics were eager and quick to push drugs as mentioned earlier.
I am interested in seeing the next episode, Im curious to see where they take it though, and what picture they paint of our lives. But if its got two MCIs (or more) then I will have to give it up lol. Helicopter crashes and Bridge explosions dont happen everyday.

:panda:Exactly, I'm waiting for the episode where they run that non-traumatic back pain x2 weeks at 2am.
I know working Fire/Rescue that personally I did not care too much for the show and did not make it past 10 minutes of my tivo recording. Maybe it's different for non EMS who watch it.
Still, my wife (RN) was watching Mercy and I got a real kick out of the drinking straw chest tube on the scene of the MVC!.
Hey I like to think of myself as at least an above average paramedic, but you're smoking crack if you think that that would even enter my thought process if I rolled up on an MVC off duty.

I have had so many MVCs off duty in CA I don't even bother count anymore. I have seen more Cracker Jack issued driver's license than I thought possible. I now live in the mountains and have already seen an over the side rescue in the first month.

Wasn't there another show about EMS? "Saved" or something like that?
Yea Saved was on for one season, then canceled. It wasn't too bad of a show. Lots of people complained that the main character was a rebel though, made all EMS look bad. He refused to wear his uniform correctly, didn't follow orders very well, etc. But he was a good guy overall, just had that non conformity rebellious attitude lol.
ok back to the show Trauma. I cant help but keep watching it each week lol. The second episode wasnt that bad, Id have to watch it again for any in depth analysis.
This third episode featured a disgruntled employee shooting up an office building.
Im almost motivated to move to San Francisco and work there for a while, so I can see how things are really done there. Compared to cities Ive worked, if the show is accurate at all, things are done very differently.
One thing thats Ive wondered since the first episode, is it common for air ambulances to only have 2 people, pilot and medic? Every company Ive ever worked with (as in in the field, not as an employee) have always traveled with at least 2 medics, one company even had 3. It just seems odd to me that one guy would be doing all the medical care in the helo. Oh except for when in this show, they take random medics from the scene with them.
So back to the main plot, this guy shoots up his building. They setup triage and all that on scene. Then the SWAT leader calls on the radio, any medics with tactical training report to the IC. Then 2 medics go and start running through the building as part of SWAT, helping secure the building while the guy is still shooting people.
Lots of Hollywood here. I dont know if I want to keep watching it or not, even if just for the laughs lol.

Guys, guys, guys, aren't ya'll just being the epitome of "doctors make the worst patients." We all turn on the boob tube for one simple reason: to be entertained. If we really want accuracy, then we could turn to documentaries - or worse, go to work. Remember in the old days when people actually sat around and talked to eachother sans the iPhones. They'd sit around a campfire telling tales.
When I board my recliner or go to the theater, I think to myself, "all right, tell me a story."
yes yes, you are right. I just wanted to give my opinions though. Sometimes its a little too unrealistic to be entertaining though.

I took the time yesterday to watch all three episodes posted on the site.
Too many MCIs
No Engine company when you land a helo
Medics going in with little to no armor
Tanker only blows out of the top
Character plot could be better but they do show some things like frequent flyers and real life situations like dealing with crying kids and big dogs. I thought the guy messing with monitor to get the drugs was interesting. The use of hypothermia for spinal injury shows some research is being done.
Where the did they come up with the idea for "orbital distention" scene?
It needs to be more realistic and develop better, bottom line.

Guys, guys, guys, ..... We all turn on the boob tube for one simple reason: to be entertained.
While entertainment is a very broad and nearly all encompassing term, I also turn on the 'telly' for information and education.
But speaking of entertainment… Scratching a chalkboard is a perfect analogy. While the guy dragging his fingernails across the blackboard may be enjoying himself and some people in the room are completely unmoved, there will be another -much more vocal- group that writhing in agony and hating every second of it.
