Sorry for the vent but I gotta get this off my chest. I've been assigned to Parris Island, 1st Marine Division and NH Camp Pendleton as a Navy Sailor.I've been deployed twice with Marine Corps Infantry and getting ready for my 3rd deployment to Afghanistan. What is it with the Navy being CHEAP in celebrating the Navy Birthday Ball and Corpsman Ball???? Now, I'm speaking purely from my experiences but all the Ball's have been done on base, usually at the SNCO club. I've been to 3 Marine Corps Dining Out's and a Marine Corps Ball and it's almost always either at a Casino or Hilton or Regency Hyatt. I'm in awe!! Where's the pride that I always read about on Navy Times and hear throughout the ranks????? UGH!!! If you love the Navy, love your Corps......Show IT!!!! Quit being cheap on the venue's in which you hold your Ball. The Marine Corps is less funded than the US Navy but yet they can have their Ball somewhere nice rather than "just on base."

Actually my experiences have been just the opposite - there is nowhere on my current base to hold such an event so everything is done out in the community. The Navy Ball this year is being held at a major casino, and some of the other events are held at local hotels with banquet facilities.

If I had to guess, I'd say the organizing committee for that particular event had to weigh the costs associated with the funds available/raised and using a location on base made for a cheaper solution. Not saying I agree with it but I can understand...granted I've never been on such an organizing committee, but usually the bottom line in any situation is the driving force.
